Cooper then exhaust s his gas tank trying to finish Floyd off. Patterson s supreme condition and fast deadly shots break down Cooper and have him hurt, forcing a referee stoppage.
I would HOPE that Floyd Patterson would win this and he could. But a well trained and motivated Bert Cooper such as the one from 1990 to 1992 would be an extremely dangerous opponent. He went 12 rounds with Mercer in an absolute blood brawl that left both combatants swollen. He had the durable Evander Holyfield stunned and the only thing saving Holy from going down was grabbing the ropes. He decked a prime Michael Moorer twice. Defeated respectable fringe contenders in Orlin Norris, Joe Hipp and Will D’witt. This fight would be fought exclusively on the inside with both men throwing ripping hooks and crosses. Even if Floyd wins he’s still getting hurt and probably decked along the way.
Your right mate. Bert in the early 90 s was such a exciting and unpredictable fighter. The way he took Mercer to the brink, and had Moorer and Holy down, what a dangerous guy! Yes Floyd absolutely soon win.... but we know he could be Hurt and kod.
Yeah it would take some balls to put any serious money on this one. Both Cooper and Patterson were roughly 6’0” tall with Patterson being maybe a half inch taller. Floyd’s best weight ranged from 182 to 188. Cooper was 215-220 and pretty muscular for his best heavyweight outings. The only check mark against Bert was that he was notoriously inconsistent and had stamina problems. But if he’s on form and good to go for at least 8-9 rounds then Patterson is gonna have some problems.
That's why I think if Floyd can get through the early rounds, when Bert's hot, then he can take advantage of his stamina issues.
Cooper would win this to me, Floyd mixes up too much to stay safe and Cooper had bigger power and good combinations in his own right when he got going. I think this would be a situation where Cooper's style and attitude pays off. Bert Cooper was a serious, deadly man when he was locked in and lets his hands go. Patterson would be beaten if he decides to fight hard. In peak form Cooper would win, Cooper was his own worst enemy.
Bert Cooper is at the lowest quadrant of elite HW's. He's near the bottom of a lot of statistical category's.
I would put a medium wager on Smokin’ Bert. Not that I think he’s a lock or even likely winner, but Floyd would probably be heavily favored and Bert had the power in both hands to spring the KO upset against sometimes fragile Floyd. Be worth putting some cheese on Coop to try to cash in on a far-from-impossible upset.
it’s a dangerous fight for Patterson regardless of how much his legacy towers over Cooper’s. The styles coupled with Bert’s physical strength and power makes this a treacherous night for Floyd. And if this were for the heavyweight title then it gets even worse as Cooper was most dangerous when he had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
