Highly, arguably the greatest left hooker among the super heavys. An underrated jab too, plus people overlook how fast handed he was as well.

Cooney was left handed. His left hook is arguably a top 5 left hook in heavyweight history power wise. Right up there with Wlad, Mike Tyson, Liston etc.

He also threw the left hook equally well to the body and head.

10/10 left hook. Strong jab too.

Cooney's problem was leaky defense, average right hand (though he could occasionally throw a good right but it wasn't natural), stamina issues.

But an absolute monster left hand.

I think he could’ve beat guys like Weaver, Page and Dokes… wish they’d happened, actually I believe it was Arcel or was it Clancy? Who said Uncle Jimmy was exposing Cooney’s lack of experience… sadly, like all things to do with Young’s boxing career it’d be snaked eyes and he’d lose the first and only? Time by cut. I think Young would’ve won that or put up a good fight.

I forget the source but Cooney actually talked about really learning how to box in retirement.

Crushing power in the hook on par with any in the division’s history, IMO.

Left jab was a really good tool and he knew how to use it … could have cut open a can of tomato soup with that jab.

Unfortunately, he didn’t stay active enough in his prime to see what he could really due. Had a lot of ‘injuries’ that seemed to never really get confirmed or explained. My guess is he was into the bottle (and some other substances) off and on during his career and then crawled inside it (with a bag full of white powder) after the Holmes fight.

I'm so glad some posters are or have actually watched Cooney fight before they make there opinion.
Cooney could fight. And if he had the mindset of a Hagler or Holyfield some would be calling him the G.O.A.T.
At his best I'd certainly pick him over EVERY heavyweight of the last ten years.
Cooney had a master left hand, thudding jabs, and easily in the top ten with the left hook or uppercut.
If he only could've taken the loss to Holmes as a learning process, got back on the horse and not as if he failed the majority of Americans, and banished himself to alcohol and drugs....
He could have done some major damage.

Awesome and dangerous left hook. One of the best at HW

He definitely had power in his left hand, but is blasting out the 400 year old versions of Lyle, Norton, and Young enough proof to rank Cooney among TBE in that category? Other than that, some of his better wins were against the likes of Eddie Gregg (who was stopped in 1 by Damiani shortly after fighting Cooney), Phillip Brown, and Dino Denis. Would have been nice to see him in the ring with a few of the top contenders/belt holders of the day aside from Holmes while he was still at his best, just to see what effect his power had on them.

Big time leverage and big time snap on that hook. Cooney's problems were from the neck up.
