Parker and Andy Lee were convinced that Parker is some dynamite puncher now that he's gained weight. And it's not even a new thing. Before the Joyce fight, Andy Lee kept insisting that the heavier version of Parker (who had bulked up for Chisora 2 earlier) is a huge puncher. He predicted an early KO, because Joyce would try to walk him down and Parker would meet him head on. We saw what happened there. Parker proceeded to come in lighter after the Joyce fight. But after his win over Zhang, he mentioned that he should gain more weight to match Zhang's power in the rematch, which was an absolutely absurd plan. Rematch never happened, but he kept bulking up. Then he comes in at 267 lbs for the Dubois fight, his heaviest weight ever. Bakole replaces Dubois on 2 day's notice, is in horrible shape and Parker wins by an early KO, which probably convinced him Lee that being extremely heavy was the right move and that he's a huge puncher now. Then before the Wardley fight, Lee again predicts an early KO. ''Joe is hitting the pads so hard, his power is different now.'' The fight happens, Parker is aggressive and tries to make a statement, exchanging with Wardley, who is a true puncher with a good chin. And he comes off second best. He barely has any more power than he used to (if at all), but his stamina is worse and his feet are slower. Will this finally make Parker and his trainer realize that he shouldn't be coming in so heavy and that he's never going to be a massive puncher? Fight to your strengths. Don't try to be something you're not.
This. I’ve always thought that Parker’s strong points are his hand speed, mobility, and his boxing brain when he chooses to use it. At 230-235 lbs he can make full use of his strong points, but at 250+ lbs he’s nothing special against top competition.
They probably were hoping Wardley would be more defensively open and sloppy but he wasn't at all. With or without the extra weight Parker is not an offensive fighter. He's lucky Wardley is too big of a plodder to try and pressure Parker and make him work going backwards. Bakole had only a few moments to press Parker and even he had success out the gate. He hurt Parker infact then threw caution to the wind knowing he'd blow soon with his zero shape.
