As we know, women fight 2 minute rounds. But every now and then, there is a push for women to fight 3 minute rounds. Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano seemed to have agreed for their trilogy fight to be over 3 minute rounds. Only for them to disagree closer to the fight and the round duration remain at 2 minutes. One of the fights on the Taylor-Serrano III undercard - Thibeault vs Casamassa - was fought over 3 minute rounds. The latest installment in the 3 minute round argument sees Chantelle Cameron binning her WBC world title in protest. Cameron was to defend against Sandy Ryan and wanted the defence to be over 3 minute rounds. So what's the consensus here? Should women continue with 2 minute rounds or revert to 3 minute rounds?
I haven't watched a women's boxing match in ages. It's like watching 12 year olds fighting with each other. The 2 minute rounds are ridiculous. It's too short and doesn't allow much room for momentum swings and drama. If they change it to 3 minutes, maybe I'll give it a watch.
I genuinely thought this was gonna be a kind of pisstake thread about women having 3-minute rounds to win an argument rather than a boxing match. Then I opened it and realised. Not sure if I should feel ashamed or not.
No woman worth her pubic hair can argue for only 3 minutes. 30 mins at least before they even get to the point of their argument.
In all seriousness, when it comes to women's boxing, I'm pretty liberal. I think some people go a bit too far and probably have a bit of an agenda... but the lack of power/KO ratio is kind of off-putting at times I will admit. But I could also say that about the lower weight guys too. However, when two women go to absolute war in the ring, it's usually absolutely spectacular. Surely no one can deny they enjoyed Taylor's first two fights with Serrano, or the two fights with Persoon. Edge of the seat stuff. In fact, no joke, since I started watching UFC in 2018, my favourite UFC fight ever was between two women, Zhang vs. Jedrzejczyk, in 2020. If you've never seen it, you will not be disappointed. I was going absolutely crazy at the time. Answering the question of this thread though, yes absolutely, I'd have three-minute rounds. I don't see the reason for not having them. The two-minute rounds are annoying, and when it actually is a great fight, it just goes too fast. And what's with the thing about amateur females still having to wear headgear? That just seems stupid to me too.
I can watch Women’s MMA, but I can’t watch women’s boxing. The lack of skill, the lack of KO power and the 2 minute rounds doesn’t make for good entertainment. Women’s MMA can be brutal and the 5 minute rounds allows for a lot of drama. I was on the edge of my seat during Holm vs Rousey and I enjoy Zhang fights. Women’s boxing… it’s like watching 2 low level male fighters with no power fighting an exhibition match.
I find watching women grapple is more entertaining than them boxing. Could be a few reasons for that. I will say, Serano-Taylor I and II were entertaining, the third one was not.
True... I enjoy women's MMA more, but the guys on Sherdog are just as critical about women's MMA as people on here are about women's boxing, if not more. I wouldn't say it's to do with a lack of skill though, quite the opposite. In fact the reason why I find a lot of women's fights boring is because it's usually just a jab-a-thon by one of the top women, or a highly rated prospect, against a mismatched opponent. You don't seem to get many girls who want to come and have a brawl. They seem to prefer to play it safe, probably because of the lack of power. But when you do get a rare brawl, it's often superb to watch, i.e. some of Katie Taylor's fights. I think one of the main problems in women's boxing is the lack of depth. It's too easy for the best girls to become undisputed and rule division after division. Too many uneven matchups. This tends to be a problem in a lot of women's sports... which is why you often get ridiculous scorelines in international football/soccer qualifiers, compared to the men's game.
