Ghana's National Sports Authority has lifted its nationwide professional boxing ban. They suspended boxing after the deaths of 2 boxers in the space of 6 months. The first in March and the second in September. The decision was made in order to come up with a new set of reforms to improve the safety of boxing in Ghana. The official line is that 'after much deliberation, the NSA confirmed on Thursday that all boxing activities are now permitted to resume following 'significant progress in addressing the key issues that led to its suspension.' Sure hope that's the reason. Sceptics might get the impression the money Matchroom's December 20th foray would bring to the country was too good to forgo.
TBF, as much as I love to rag on Eddie, a Matchroom show surely would have the proper safety provisions in place, so there is no reason to disallow it.
Fair call. It just seems opportune that the blanket ban, only fairly recently imposed - following the ring death in September - has been conveniently lifted. Let's not forget, Matchroom went public with their show for Ghana before the ban had even been lifted.
You're not wrong at all; no doubt some favouritism and greased palms are in action, but I don't think Matchroom are stupid enough or money-hungry enough to skimp on safety on one of their shows.
Yea, its fairly certain that Mathcroom pushed for the ban to be lifted so that they can proceed with their event. However, Matchroom handled Covid really well and I am sure they are doing their best to appease the Ghanian authorities when it comes to their safety needs.
Matchroom is a completely professional outfit. They'll have all proper safety precautions in place. If I'm Ghana, I'm far, far, FAR less worried about a Matchroom event than some small rando event at a small venue.
So what to do they do when the Matchroom circus has left town, reimpose the ban? My concern is opportunism may have removed the ban that was in place for very good reason.
