    Over twelve rounds at 160lbs.

I was amazed to find there haven't been a slew of poll threads on this matchup. There were a few way back in the VBulletin days (those polls didn't survive the software update to Xenforo)...and in the new Xenforo era there has been exactly one, made in 2020, but it's very hyper specifically focused on which of them wins in the year 2012.

So, here we go ...for somehow the first time in th modern history of this board, prime for prime, best version for best version ...who takes it? Each is the other's biggest "missed opportunity" (aside from maybe Pirog for GGG and Mayweather for Martínez...and Ward for both).

Viable fight anytime from late 2009 (when Sexy moved up from 154) until 2013, IMO.

2014 is obviously too late, as that's when Cotto got to become middleweight champ by whooping a gimp.

So we're talking about the GGG that fought Makarov, Núñez, Tapia, Ouma, Simon, Fuchigami, Proksa, Rosado, Ishida, Macklin or Stevens vs. the Maravilla that fought Williams x2, Pavlik, Dzinziruk, Barker, Macklin, Chávez, or Murray.

Sexy Sergio(e) puts up a bloody effort and touches up GGG but eventually gets stopped. His brevity and defensive deficits are like a Christmas gift for GGG who loves nothing more than engaging.

That said, if GGG has any insecurities about his sexuality, Sexy Sergio(e) might distract him with his good looks and flirty gestures. As a handsome man myself I recognize game and Sexy Sergio(e) is very, very attractive elevating his 8/10 game to a 9,5.

I can see the logic behind GGG inevitably grinding Martínez down to a stoppage but also...Maravilla is LEVELS above the best southpaws that Golovkin did face (Monroe Jr. and Proksa).

Golovkin fought guys that gave Martinez a hard time and he absolutely battered them.

Proksa, who fought somewhat like Martinez and who was a highly rated fighter at the time, got smashed like an egg.

Cotto, who beat Martinez, looked like he'd swallowed a frog when the prospect of fighting GGG came up. Same goes for Pavlik, who despite his 'too big, too strong' blabber, declined to face GGG in the ring.

Martinez himself could have fought Golovkin during the tailend of his career, decided other pastures were greener.

So simply comparing the fighters around at the time, gives us a pretty good idea of the way the wind was blowing.

I will however concede the possibility of sexy Sergio winning a beauty contest against Golovkin, who despite his boyish good looks, probably doesn't have the rugged charm of Martinez.

Would have been much better for the sport if Martinez had passed the torch to Golovkin instead of cashing out while clearly compromised against Cotto. The smoke and mirrors career of Clenelo would have been much harder to concoct.

With his chin and ramrod jab I could see GGG fighting a somewhat safety minded first few rounds like he did against David Lemieux and grinding out a win.

Martinez had a rematch scheduled with Chavez Jr., with both taking tuneups before it. The rematch eventually fell through and Martinez sat one the sidelines due to injuries.
HBO was the one who made the Martinez vs Cotto fight as they wanted a PPV; it was Martinez´ last fight and Cotto was allowed to fight Rodriguez on the condition that he faces Martinez next.

So basically, Martinez only could have fought Golovkin when he fought Murray. But Murray was the better financial option given the location of the fight.

If Golovkin had made his HBO debut a year earlier, we might have seen the Martinez fight.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say Golovkin by late round stoppage, with the cards close in favour of either man. Maravilla certainly had the speed, of both hand and foot, to frustrate GGG and win rounds. However, GGG's pressure is relentless and Martinez was prone to lapses in concentration, so I think GGG would get through to Sergio eventually.

    GGG.
If limited Macklin and Murray (2x) could put Martinez his ass, and sloopy Chavez Jr almost stopped him, why could not GGG?

To be fair I can't knock Martinez too much. He knew he was on his tail end, and when that is the case a smart guy will opt for easier fights for more cash. That said, Golovkin was the clear legacy choice ... if Martinez thought he could beat him.
