the weight thing is interesting, from feather to welter and a pop at middle even and while it is true many, many fighters then were hopping in & out of 2 different weight classes, the smaller percentage entertaining 3, never mind a 4th was rarer. Funnily, I don't put much stock in that MW venture, as even his opponent was a Welter cum middle... I think it was 'Good Draw' at the time and money is always the deciding factors in Big Time Boxing.

my point is where do we Rate Armstrong, I would lean to a Lightweight cum Welter, his fight(s) above only adds worth and his earlier younger career passing through lighter weights should be seen as an overall thing,

I think it is hard enough rating fighters at one weight never mind multiple weights, where none of them really should be considered, Boxing and the Fighter(s) is better off served for all fighters to be rated in their One and maybe two divisions at most, a lot of multi divisional jumping can be a bit of opportunity served, $$$, but not really a solidifying entry for most.

Henry Armstrong was obviously an Elite exceptional talent, who marks one or two divisions in Boxing History, his fighting style worked with his built in mechanical machine kind of a body, that seemingly never stopped, a little boaring in bull, with both pistons always pumping, unrelenting stamina and hammering guns, is what won the day out for him against many, many just as capable fighters & victims.

was he the greatest LW and/or Welter, I let you more qualified experts work that out.

As too me, he was one of them, he was one among the Greatest Fighters of All-time, more to the Elite mix.

    Hi Buddy.
You make a valid point he grant, as I have come to expect from your goodself, I will concede that he did fight in the main heavier opponents as he progressed through the weights, whilst staying around 140/ 147 himself, so I am rowing back a tad, my point was, if asked who/ which champs were big/enormous/power, punchers, down the ages, Armstrong would not enter my orbit, I don't think that's an absurd thought, like my friend JT has said , it's a good talking point.

    Hi Buddy.
Excellent post, that encapsulates so many variables both with Armstrong and multi weight champs, intersped with customary humbleness .

How weak does an era need to be for one man to topple so many divisions?

it doesn't need to be week at all, it is merely proof that most Top Fighters afforded the opportunity might just pull it off, especially stand out ones...

Boxing, as most of us know here, isn't Sport, but rather Capitalizing BUSINESS.

    Regretfully.
