It was partly Haugen’s big mouth…but lost in this is that it was a “Great card” Azumah Nelson vs Ruelas Norris vs Blocker McClellan vs Julian Jackson Michael Nunn vs Dan Morgan with a card like this it’s no wonder it was a huge event
It was a good card, Philly. Just one correction - McClellan didn’t fight Jackson that night. That one actually took place in Vegas a few months later on the same card as Chavez v Terrence Ali. I remember that distinctly as that was one of the first fight cards I watched after getting into boxing in a big way.
True, I thought he was robbed against Nelson the first time, but he gotten taken apart brutally in the rematch. Then KO'ed with one shot by feather-fisted Calvin Grove.
During the build up to the fight Greg was going through a messy divorce to Karen, the mother of his three kids. She had cheated on him with one of his friends if memory serves. And then she tried to get full custody of the kids. A few months after the fight she infamously tried to run over Greg with her car. Anyways, that wasn't prime Haugen that night, not the guy who took Macho Camacho's 0 two years before.
Haugan vs Gatti in a mythical, now that would be a night at the fights... JCC was an unrelenting machine, a great fighter. Greg Haugan was one of my favourite fighters, like Gatti, there was always a big anticipation leading up to his fights..
King’s cards that I attended always offered value for money for the real boxing fan. Sometimes they’d start at 4 in the afternoon and go past midnight because he had so many guys under contract hat he had to fill ‘X number of fights per year’ obligations to. I saw guys like Simon Brown and Julian Jackson in quick throwaway wins on the early parts of cards before hardly anyone had shown up.
