    I think it's between these 2, Noel.

Nelson for me probably, but very little to separate them. I'd be interested in the result of a poll.

No worries mate, I've only ever made a poll at the time of initially posting the thread.

Hopefully we'll get a decent number of posts, giving us a good gauge on the forums view. I suspect it will mostly between these two and that it will be close either way.

    Azumah.

But there's a HUGE drop off after these two.

I agree these are the clear top 2.

Brian Mitchell would be my 3. He doesn't have anything like the quality of win resume of Tiger or Nelson and is therefore rightly behind both, but he was far more dominant over his weaker opposition and his 13 x successful title defences were all on the road.

At his best Nelson could do everything in a boxing ring.
Tiger was more a one trick pony, bot that one trick
    was very special .
So in my opinion it's Nelson then everyone else
    born in Africa.

I have a soft spot for Azumah. He was one of my favorite fighters of 80's & 90's. But I think he gets the nod objectively, too.

I know he's not in this conversation, but how far removed is Brian Mitchell?

Azumah fought so well as a relative unknown against Sanchez. He elevated himself and pretty much stayed at that level. Really learned a'la The Professor

Brian Mitchell is in the conversation too, although he did not beat as many quality rivals as the other two did.

This and the Sanchez-Laporte fight were like the coming of age versions of boxing. The passing of the torch so to speak, even through it was tragic and we did not know it at the time.

Azumah was so versatile. He could fight you multiple different styles. Tiger had one style but he mastered it. Azumah for me as he could be just as comfortable on the front foot as he could be on the back foot. Marvelous fighter
