Alternatively one could say the only real banger he met at heavyweight had him down for 14 seconds. Where are the punchers at any weight on his resume? For me his chin is unproven. Tunney fought 44 nobodies ,that's over two thirds of his resume! Name opponents? In 4 of his fights with Greb , a non puncher, he had the following weight advantages; 12lbs,9lbs,9lbs, 14 lbs. Against Loughran10lbs. Against Smith13lbs. Gibbons was having his last fight. Carpentier was past it. Risko was green and a non puncher. Madden was a non puncher. Weinert was a non puncher. Spalla was Euro level ,and never stopped a class man. Levinsky was past prime ,and a non puncher. =Case for a top chin unproven.
I read somewhere a few years ago (but can't remember where) that he was dazed in one of his heavyweight fights before facing Dempsey. I only had a vague recollection of this and wasn’t sure whether the opponent was Carpentier or possibly Gibbons... That's why I did a quick search on boxrec before posting. However, the fight against Carpentier was actually at LHW. Here’s what I found about the fight against Gibbons: “Tunney, however, didn't go through Gibbons without taking a few shots, and Tommy even dazed Tunney with a pair of terrific punches in the eighth.” Source: Gene Tunney: The Enigma of the Ring by Nat Fleischer https://boxrec.com/wiki/index.php/Gene_Tunney_vs._Tommy_Gibbons
Interesting. Thank you for posting. I will eventually cross-reference Pollacks book on Dempsey which has a ton of Tunney's accent and see it is also mentioned. Interesting point.
Of course, Dempsey made a mistake in not going to the neutral corner, as required by the rules, and this caused the referee to delay the start of the count.
I'm not sure where you are going with this? Where have I questioned the facts? Everyone and their Granny knows about the Long Count, and Dempsey's refusal to go to a neutral corner that caused it. I bought the film of this fight in 1966. Here's a fact for you,in the 8th round Tunney knocked Dempsey down, and the referee,Dave Barry, immediately began a count of one , with Tunney standing near Dempsey. I know both fights very well and I can tell you that the referee made a mistake in round 8, he should have sent Tunney to the neutral corner before starting the count. Those are the facts, and they remain so. Have a nice day.
Quite true, but what is the point of your last two posts? You are arguing against a point of view that hasn't been made!
I come down on the side of unproven. A decent chin, sure. A top one. A bridge too far off the quality of his opponents. Other than Dempsey, only Carpentier had much of a rep at all as a puncher. I don't believe Gibbons ever stopped any top heavyweight.
April 5, 1920. KO Sullivan rocked/staggered/buckled Tunney in the 1st round, but Gene came right back and knocked him out in the same round.
I was instantly wondering if this stat was Correct from The long Count. So many knockdown's are skipped over because they don't read the other non big name fight's. I don't know the real answer but I was certainly guessing it was more than One...
In fairness Dempsey was one of the most dangerous finished that the heavyweight division ever produced, of any weight. We also have to consider whether we are comparing him to other men his size, or he full pantheon of heavyweights.
