Bungu had a streak of 14-0 in title fights in which he beat Mckinney twice, Danny Romero, and Jesus Salud. Just admit you're wrong and let's move on.
He’s very obviously ahead of Mugabi, who you have at 5. I think 5 is fine for him and I also think he’s really close to Quartey. Botile also gets forgotten but didn’t have quite as good of a career.
Brian Mitchell is one of my favorite under the radar fighters, but I can’t include him in this conversation. He’s absolutely in the conversation for 3, but Tiger vs Nelson is the only real conversation to have. I would say it’s the professor for me but there is a case to be made for either guy.
Tiger for me. Really came up the hard way. After emigrating to Britain in the 50’s, he continued his boxing career, taking any fight that came along to gain experience, losing a few in the process. However despite being taken in as an opponent, he stopped Terry Downes on his home patch. After winning the British Empire title, he went on to beat Yolande Pompey, who had lost to Archie Moore for the world title. In the late 50’s he moved to New York and took on all-comers, a who’s who of the red hot middleweights. Eventually beating Gene Fullmer for the world title. Well into his 30’s he lost and regained the title to Giardello before losing to Griffith. He went onto beat Jose Torres for the undisputed light heavyweight title. Just before that he beat middleweight champion, Benvenuti in a non title fight. By the time Tiger lost the title to Bob Foster, he had fought the best of 2 divisions. A short while later, he succumbed to cancer after an incredible career, fighting everyone of consequence and reigning as undisputed world champions in 2 divisions. Yes, Tiger, by a long way, for me, as Africa’s greatest.
I understand why it's going to be a discussion and normally is between these two, but even though I understand, it is very, very difficult to look at Nelson firing on all cylinders and not say it is him. He's one of those guys where if I were going to witness his birth I'd half expect him to be born wearing little steel-toed boots. Just because. How water met flame and remained cool.
Can´t say I know much about boxing in Tanzania except I was a huge fan of one of their fighters from the mid to late 2000´s: Rogers Mtagwa. His fight with Tomas Villa is a classic and he was so close to winning a World title against the undefeated Juan Manuel Lopez who was at his peak in another tremendous fight. Could be argued Lopez was never the same again. This content is protected This content is protected
