Good points. Sometimes fights didn't happen due to the risk-reward calculations of opponents. Haye for instance would have been a big win but this was the man who ducked Cunningham for undisputed at cruiser. I have no doubt Fury was 100% willing to fight Ruiz, who would have been a walkover. People like to blame Fury for fights not materialising when he was clearly avoided himself. But It's also true that Fury has been risk-reward minded. Chisora 3 and Ngannou were joke fights that damaged his legacy. By the time he fought Usyk, the fire had diminished. I don't think he ever reached peak motivation again after Wilder 2. Too much wealth and status, advancing age and wear. He had lost the will to win that characterised his best performances and he'd got used to the officials giving him the benefit of the doubt when it was close. Attempting to fiddle his way through Usyk 2 despite the facts of the 1st fight does suggest that Fury was semi-content to lose again, so long as he didn't get humiliated as he may well have done if he'd gone all out.
Much better analysis than OP's but I don't think Fury gets enough credit for his wins, or at least many are holding other notable figures to lower standards. Chisora and Whyte are arguably the best wins of Vitali and Povetkin, with Kevin and Hammer arguably rounding out their top 10's. Imagine if Povetkin had dethroned Wlad and won a Wilder trilogy 2-0-1 in addition to his career as it stands, he'd be a consensus ATG here.
For the record, for me, he needs to come back, beat Joshua (still important to me, and not a gimme by any means), and have a few more good wins to bump at least one Chisora off the list. Then, to me, by my personal standards, he'll be a legit, certified, first-tier ATG.
For a fighter with the titles he has won and the level he has reached, his resume is average. It lacks depth. He does not have enough world level HW wins on his resume to qualify as even having a good resume.
Nope. He couldn't tell Arum to let Tate fight him, and Arum didn't want to risk his WBA belt. Don King didn't want Holmes and Dokes to unify, so he can have to fighters with titles. He didn't need to unify in the eyes of the public so there is no problem. He fought his number 1 contender in Cooney. There was no need for white washing.
Every other champion faced these kinds of difficulties in unifying, and made it happen. Usyk took 30%. Holmes didn't.
He has 1 elite level win. Wlad (ugly as sin but it counts) Two very good level wins in Whyte and Wilder Then some solid stuff against the likes of Chisora 1 & 2. He's another who wasted his best years with drugs or whatever. A needless Chisora 3 and nearly got his head taken off by a Usyk. A good fighter not a great one.
