Why wouldn’t he fight Opetaia instead to be undisputed?

A whole bag of money. That's a huge pay day for Zurdo on PPV. Jai is a beast but he's a nobody and it's not a big money fight.

Zurdo gets the loss, Benavidez is an elite fighter while Zurdo is not...

I can live with Zurdo facing Benavidez just so long as the winner commits to fighting Opetaia right afterward. The wrinkle is that Benavidez is keen to go right back down to 175 afterward if Bivol agrees to face him. So there's lots of moving pieces.

The silver lining is that Benavidez seems to have more cojones than Zurdo when it comes to facing any and all opponents -- so if it takes a Benavidez win over the elusive Zurdo for Opetaia finally to get a crack at unifying the belts, that's fine.

Anyway, we'll have to wait at least until May 2 to know how things will shake out....

Looks like this fight is really happening for Cinco de Mayo.

Are they going to sit around for the next 6 months until then?

    Bivol’s next fight is Beterbiev.

As great as Bivol is, as great as Jai is, they aren’t big draws. But a fight between a Mexican (Zurdo) and a Mexican-American (Benavidez) for a world title? That’s massive. It’ll do solid PPV numbers in the US, the beer companies in Mexico will get into a bidding war over which sponsors the fight to be broadcast for free in the country (that’s how it works there), etc.

so the answer to it all is $$$.
