Benavidez lost his super middleweight title on the scales, Canelo ducks him so he moves up to light heavyweight for three fights. Now he's looking to jump again to cruiserweight. There is a bbc article that says he was 258 pounds at age twelve. Good chonky lord. The discussion prior to Yarde was the weight drain had Benavidez looking vulnerable. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't but Yarde didn't do himself any favors by laying on the ropes eating punches. This begs the question not only about his walking around weight, but also what the length of time he's been going up and down in weight has been and how much. When will this catch up to him if at all and does anyone have knowledge of his day to day weight outside of camp? Edit: Apparently Benavidez walk around weight is 200+. Cheers.
Not sure but he certainly doesn't have good genetics. Even after a training camp he still looks soft and flabby but it seems to work for him.
I think he's prime right now and will only get worse. He relies on speed and reflexes a lot and has been in sparring wars with champions since he was a kid. Cruiserweight is such a stupid move for him. There is no star power and he's going to be less effective. The only reason to move up is so he can eat.
It's not a good move either. Once he moves to cruiser it will be that much harder to get back to 175.
this is his natural fighting weight, 175. he looked the best physically that i have ever seen him. you got to look past the loose skin, which remains from when hes out of shape. underneath the skin he looked toned and hydrated. his abs, chest and arms were well defined. looked healthy.
He's got incredible genetics for speed and stamina. Just **** for aesthetics and staying lean. I also suspect he's blowing up between fights, which absolutely is going to bite him in the ass someday -- sorry, if you're a pro athlete and you know you easily chunk up, you know you basically can't have cheat days.
Yeah, the constant up-and-down in weight is definitely going to catch up with him sooner or later. Cutting from 200+ to 168 takes a toll on recovery, reflexes, and durability. You can get away with it when you’re young, but long term it affects stamina and punch resistance. Moving up and staying closer to his natural weight might actually extend his career.
He has "skinny fatman" genetics like Tony Bellew The gyno man boobs and lack of definition are the giveaway..... Great gas tank though I think he is undisciplined between fights hence why he blows up so much.
Benavidez doesn't have that discipline His career is all smoke and mirrors at the moment and even he has bought into the hype because his confidence is sky high at the moment
also, Bivol and Beterbiev’s next fight will be each other. So hed have to wait around for a harder fight that’ll earn less (unless it’s Saudi funded). As you said, the Zurdo fight is way more profitable — a Mexican-American vs a Mexican for a world title is going to sell.
