Describe the personality traits and psychological profile that underpins your fighter. Mine? Hateful, spiteful, competitive. Weak, fragile ego with a cascade of chips on his shoulder. Slightly psychopathic mixed with a proclivity of disillusionment and cognitive distortion. Choose your fighter?
Most people think it's the angry scary guy you should worry about. However it's the calm fighter you should most be concerned with. The man who is happy to train, enjoys sparring or running miles every morning like Hagler did. The man who's in the ring just doing what they love. The calm fighter is relaxed, so he is more fluid, less tension helps him save energy, see everything and keep his rhythm going no matter what happens. See: Usyk "Rhythm is everything in boxing. Every move you make starts with your heart, and that’s in rhythm or you’re in trouble. Your rhythm should set the pace of the fight. If it does, then you penetrate your opponent’s rhythm. You make him fight your fight, and that’s what boxing is all about." -Sugar Ray Robinson.
That quote from SRR is a poetic & beautiful. And fair point about the calmness and enjoyment a fighter feels when he's boxing: he's at home, he's in a zen space. Maybe this is the key to longevity and skill - "zen and the art of boxing". I wouldn't know how spiteful & distorted these 2 fighters are/were, they're quite private, well, usyk is.
Calm, quiet, has moments of rage, stiff in interviews and overall not a very interesting person outside of boxing
No GOAT or even great fighters are hatefull or angry. Let's take the man himself for example basically coined the term GOAT, greatest of all time, Muhammad Ali Muhammad Ali the most or second most known boxer of all time You know what the greatest misconception about Ali is? Is that he's a master slick boxer...WRONG. He never threw a bodypunch in his life. Was a headhunter. He clinched heavily post war and didn't use his feet nearly as well...but what made Ali great was his unwavering belief in himself and toughness whereby you'd have to kill him in that ring.
The will to endure suffering and faith. Like it! I sometimes think Christianity is a great teacher of faith/self faith as well as the ability to stand and remain. I do think Ali had a massive chip on his shoulder though - what with the whole ordeal with the USA government, prison and the civil rights movement.
