You can't bring up Canelo without the GGG discussion breaking out, after which point, the truth will come out.

Canelo went after him because he knew he was shot. When negotiations with Kovalev stalled both Beterbiev and Bivol offered him a shot. Matter of fact Bivol even offered to go down to 168. Both heard crickets from Canelo. Canelo just wanted a belt grab it had nothing to do with testing himself. He wanted a belt from a shot fighter period

The WBA interim belt was his initial title. He was immediately upgraded to WBA regular, and his very next fight was was a WBA regular title defense. The beginning of his 20 straight title defenses. GGG defended it 5 times by KO before Geale, who defeated the Almighty Sturm to unify the WBA super and IBF titles, then vacated his WBA super belt for the same reason Sturm was running from GGG, to prevent an embarrassing ass whooping. GGG at that point was the WBA super Champion starting with Rosado. He then defended it another 15 times (13 ) by KO. his first 17 title defenses were by KO, before he ran into Jacobs and Canelo. He then smashed Martirosyan ( RIP) in 2 rounds for number 20. He also smashed Geale along the way in 3 rounds.

WBA interim or regular WBA belt aren't real titles, especially if there's a Super champion in your division, you can't begin a title reign if it never even started. Felix Sturm held the WBA title since 2006, GGG won the secondary/not real belt from the number 15 WBA contender in Milton Nunez in 2010. Sturm didn't lose that belt until 2012 against IBF champ Daniel Geale who than vacated at the end of 2012. I don't really care who ducked who, GGG ducked Erislandy Lara his entire career while both were WBA champs at 160 yet nobody was claiming he was the WBA champ when GGG was the unified champion so I'm not trying to hear the same for GGG. 15 defenses is NOT the record for world Middleweight defenses, it's still Hopkins with 20 official defenses of the middleweight title starting with his IBF belt(no secondary belts included) up until he lost to Jermain Taylor.

But again this is all ifs buts and maybes.

You're talking about hypotheticals that never happened maybe Golovkin was avoided maybe he wasn't but the fact is his resume is not that strong.

And when Golovkin did step up in competition vs Jacobs, Canelo, Derevyanchenko, he didn't look overly impressive.

I don't like Canelo but the fact is he got the big fights he won a majority of them and his achievements/resume are clearly better than Golovkin's not to mention he has a bigger fan base.

The question is who will be more remembered ? And for me its clearly Canelo whether you like him or not.

Canelo busted for PEDs, so it's only fair that it's GGG. One and done - no longer should be considered for any hof or atg status

Fun fact: that version of Kovalev does not.
    Lemieux is a fine fighter.
Yeah, we all imagined that Canelo got bust for PEDs

Golovkin was ranked as the world's best boxer, pound for pound, from September 2017 to September 2018 by The Ring magazine. He was also ranked as the world's best active middleweight by The Ring,[3] Transnational Boxing Rankings Board,[4] ESPN,[5] and BoxRec.[6] He has the most title defenses in middleweight boxing history.[7][8]

Come on, bro this is a reputable boxing forum, why the **** would I need to look in wikipedia of all places to find out what I already know. Do you look at wikipedia for all of your information?

This is boxrec, a REPUTABLE boxing website that holds GGG's real record.
    • Defeated 15 opponents (13 by KO) for World Middleweight Title (secondary belts excluded).
    • Has a record of 15-2-1 (13 KOs) in world title fights (secondary belts excluded).
    • Has a record of 6-2-1 (5 KOs) against former, current & future world champions (regular belts excluded):

This is what boxrec says about Bernard Hopkins
    • Longest reign as World Middleweight Champion (10 years, 2 months, and 17 days), surpassing Tommy Ryan.
    • Most opponents beaten for World Middleweight Championship (18), surpassing Felix Sturm.
    • Most title defenses as World Middleweight Champion (20), surpassing Carlos Monzon.

"Gennady Golovkin made his record 21st defensive of his middleweight titles Friday night, knocking down previously unbeaten Kamil Szeremeta four times before their fight was stopped after the seventh round.

Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) surpassed Bernard Hopkins’ division record for title defenses and retained his IBF and IBO 160-pound belts with a one-sided victory in his first fight in 14 months."

Bro I don't care about wikipedia posts or some random news article, I mean really, how dumb are you? I care about FACTS only. This is LITERALLY his boxrec page, a website SPECIFICALLY dedicated to boxing.

In his return to the ring for the first time in 14 months, Gennadiy Golovkin took a seventh-round TKO win over Kamil Szeremeta retaining his IBF and IBO Middleweight titles. This win allowed Golovkin to set a record with his 21st defense of a Middleweight title. It’s the most world title defenses in the Middleweight division, breaking a tie with Bernard Hopkins.

"Gennady Golovkin made a successful return to the ring Friday night, defending his IBF and IBO middleweight crowns against Kamil Szeremeta in dominant fashion.
