If Usyk wants a big money fight, why not fight Zhang in China? Zhang is coming off a loss but is still far more credible than Wilder. And southpaw vs southpaw is always fun.
But we aren't living in 2020. and Wilder was never a king. Who did he fight pre 2020? He did not fight Parker or Povetkin or Joshua or Chisora or Whyte. What made him a king?
I don't get where Wilder is supposed to be a big money fight ? Wilder wasn't that big in America was he ?
Zhang beat Wilder and is better then Wilder but Wilders power is more respected as a one punch threat. Zhang let his 3 best opponents come back. If Wilder catches someone with a bomb and they aren't 6'9 thats probably the end of the fight. If Zhang catches Usyk, Usyks probably going to win the fight anyway. If Wilder catches Usyk he probably won't. Thus Wilder is the more interesting matchup.
Have to compare it to Lennox Lewis wanting to fight Mike Tyson almost a decade removed from his prime. It’s more of a bucket list to close out an era than an actual threat. Tyson did it when he fought Holmes, Holyfield did it against Foreman, and etc… Usyk and Crawford reached that level where they can fight whoever.
Zhang being a southpaw gives him a much better chance of landing though. Usyk was getting hit quite easily vs 5'9 fellow southpaw Mnchunu though Usyk proved to be too powerful for Mnchunu. Its clear that Usyk is defensively much better vs orthodox dudes than compared to his fellow lefties.
Probably around the time Zhang was un-hyping Joyce it would have made sense, but then he lost to parker and kebabman and got even older than old. So he wouldn't get much cred for this now, I think. Other thing is, does Zhang have ancestor warriors guiding him? Because Wilder does and it makes a difference.
I dare say that usyk has a better chin than fury and great ability to come back from getting hit. I don't believe he would have taken wilders punch worse than fury did in his first fight against wilder. Much less now, where there is almost a 0 chance of wilder landing against usyk and a 100% chance of wilder having lost some power. Many remember wilder from 6 years ago against subpar opposition (and ortiz, granted) and apply that memory to fantasy matchups like usyk. That is very far from reality. Zhang is way more dangerous when hitting the target right now. I doubt old wilder could have knocked out another old wilder the way zhang did it
The biggest difference is Zhang could generate power from nowhere and hide it well... Wilder telegraphed like crazy to get his maximum power - and that doesn't work against high IQ fighters who are high activity. The only thing I disagree with is... He probably could knock his older self out pretty impressively - but mostly because he's easy to hit, not high IQ and so would get flush with the full force, full telegraph shot.
Wilder looks pretty shot and can't pull the trigger anymore. He lost to Zhang and Parker and meandered his way to a KO win over a journeyman that took him like 7 rounds. Basically the guy can't beat contenders and now he's got a shot at the heavyweight champion after beating Anthony herndon?
