Canelo or GGG, ¿who do you think will be remembered more fondly as the years go by?

The discussion has moved on somewhat since I made the above post.

My above post answered the question posed in the thread title directly, i.e. wasn't about who ranked higher, but who will be more fondly remembered. I think Canelo will be more fondly remembered by casual fans because he was higher profile and less fondly by hardcore fans because the highest profile fighters, who are always the "A side" and have the control in selecting their opponents and more leverage when it comes to agreeing the terms, are generally less liked by hardcore fans, whereas I think hardcore fans have some sympathy with GGG because he was a lower profile, feared fighter who was somewhat avoided when he was at his absolute peak.

In terms of ranking on an ATG, P4P list, Canelo will rank higher if quality of opposition beaten is key to your criteria, especially if you factor in success moving up the weights.

That said, GGG should rank higher at MW based purely on fights contested in that division, whilst I think prime for prime GGG was the better H2H fighter. If anything, based on other documented fight night weights, I suspect Canelo was the heavier man when they fought, GGG was already beginning to slide when they first fought and according to this site the media scorecards were 18 to GGG, 3 a draw and 1 to Canelo, which is pretty conclusive imo and just about meets the threshold for a robbery - Gennady Golovkin drew with Saúl Álvarez :: Boxing :: MMA Decisions. GGG had slipped further by the 2nd fight, yet according to this site 10 media scorecards were in his favour to 1 for Canelo, though this time 7 had it a draw - Canelo Álvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin II - Wikipedia.

 

This thread has made me angry over the GGG v Canelo 1 & 2 scorecards all over again.

 

It’s Canelo for anyone who doesn’t get overly involved emotionally with male athletes.

 

I'm a bigger fan of GGG but Canelo is easily going to be remembered more in the future due to his bigger popularity, notable names that he's faced, his win over GGG, being undisputed at 168, and being seen as the best fighter for a time. Clearly the greater fighter between the two.

As far as who would be remembered more fondly it's likely going to be GGG due to his less arrogant personality and more exciting style. Plus people being more sympathetic about GGG being screwed over at least one victory over Canelo.

 

And in the past there was alot more that had Golovkin winning both fights, those lists are not as easy to find now.

 

For the polls on this site, I seem to recall that whilst the majority scored their second contest to GGG, it was a close enough split to be considered a close fight that Canelo was lucky to get the decision in, rather than an out and out robbery.

The split in votes in their first contest reflected those of the media and was a sufficiently high majority to GGG, to constitute a robbery, imo.

For what it's worth, and no individuals view is worth as much as the picture painted by dozens of scorecards, the scoring spread reflected my own views. I.e. in their first contest GGG was robbed of a clear win, whilst I thought GGG edged a close one in their second fight, but don't consider it a robbery.

 

I like ggg but whenever I think of him the first thing that springs to mind is his losses against canelo which is a damn shame as I think he was a better fighter

 

I get it and I agree. But that means Canelo got credit for 2 wins that should have went to GGG, regardless of the lesser points spread. Subconsciously GGG is already owed one and at the very least should get the benefit of the doubt in a close 2nd fight that was leaning towards GGG. That's why it is a double robbery

 

Well, assuming you're talking about he official results in their first two fights, Canelo gets the credit for a win and a draw, not two wins.

Obviously, as always, you have a biased minority on either side. I think the majority view is GGG was robbed of a clear win in their first contest and edged a close 2nd fight, in which it's reasonable not to score him as the winner.

 

And it will keep happening because you will have people saying that GGG's best win is Daniel Jacobs and Canelo's best win is GGG. So because of the robberies Canelo has 2 wins over GGG, and GGG has zero wins over Canelo. Canelo apologists love it.

 

Guys I’ve decided that Canelo actually won against Bivol so from now on I’ll count that as a win on his record.
