Different sport (although Darren Fletcher did comms for boxing on TNT) but Adam Smith could learn from this. A huge moment yet the commentator stays silent for 60 seconds letting the crowd and the celebrations do the talking.

Absolutely rubbish. He's just a salesman. Literally never heard an interesting thing come out of Smith.

He's not a bad guy and probably gets a bit to much flack, I just wish he'd dial it down a bit and not get carried away as often as he does. He tends to only see the success one fighter might be having during a fight and ignoring anything the opponent does.

I think that's a bit unfair. Over the years TV and promotion have just got a bit too close - there are no more journalists turned commentators who can take a neutral view, and even worse, pundits are aligned to promoters now too.

Boxing on TV is just a constant sales pitch like wrestling now, building up "feuds" and narratives that play out on social media and the YouTube whores.

It's just how things are now but plenty of us old gits will never get used to it.

I'm not sure I grasp the logic underlying your message. Are you saying that because boxing is now littered with shills that it's ok for each shill to be a shill because everyone else is a shill? Imagine if we took that sort of logic and applied to to everything else. Look at the nature of politics in the UK and the erosion of the country. Boxing is just a bit of light entertainment, but people like Smith just contribute to the erosion of the quality of the product. Gone are the days of objective and stylistically appealing analysis and commentary. It's just a perpetual cycle of sales. You've got the likes of Smith, who's the ultimate company man, as the figurehead for this kind of implicit persuasion. Then you've got the likes of Darren "ooooooooh!" Barker on the commentary crediting punches on gloves for the 'house' boxer and not a word spoken when something meaningful lands from the opponent, and the likes of Bellend.

    Disingenuous and also extremely boring.
