when discussing boxers I don’t believe we should focus on the shoulda woulda coulda…we focus on the actual. He defended his title 3x wilder, Whyte, Chisora.

 

to be fair Wilder was awesome and feared at that time, Whyte had already beaten lots of supposed top guys and Parker who people are still rimming, and Chisora has gone on to impressive wins.

Fact remains, he lost the best years of his career, much like Ali did. And he still proved his level by coming back and beating Wilder three times, then Whyte and Chisora. That doesn’t happen if the ability isn’t there.

People forget that for every Frazier, Foreman, Liston or Norton on Ali’s record, there were also fights like Blin, Chuvalo, Mathis and Wepner. Even the greats have padding and context on their resumes.

 

A knackered and finished Povetkin smashed up Whyte in a rich boy's back garden way before Fury got in with the shell of him.

Fury did indeed give us some great fights but he also denied us of the Klitschko rematch, a fight I think the latter would have found a way to win. He wasted too much time messing around and that is all on him, not boxing politics etc. he behaved like a childish moron and tried to win people over with sob stories. Meanwhile his main rival, Usyk, kept his mouth shut and got on with business and tearing up the division.

 

Come on, bro – Povetkin didn’t ‘smash up’ Whyte. He got battered and knocked down twice over four rounds, then landed one perfect shot in the fifth. That’s boxing. Surprised @Aydamn hasn’t pulled you up on that.

The rest of the post is pretty much spot on though. Usyk has shown this generation of heavyweights for what they are and is the true great of the era. Fury’s act has worn thin, and money and fame have only amplified what he always was. That said, there’s no denying the Wilder comeback fight was the stuff of legend.

 

Povetkin was an absolute shell of his former self, age and juicing to be able to compete with these heavyweight behemoths had done a number on him, he was there for the taking. I think the way it ended is a smash up, he doesn't know what day it is, he's completely out of it, despite Eddie's claims that he was up on 8. I think the bottom line though is that by the time Fury fought Whyte he was finished, any decent heavy would have dealt with him at that stage.

 

Bro, like the line in Goodfellas – you may fold under questioning. Aside from that uppercut, a shot from the gods that would’ve slept any heavyweight on the planet, Povetkin was getting handled with ease for four rounds, dropped twice, and barely hanging on. One punch doesn’t turn that into a ‘smash up’. That’s just heavyweight boxing doing what it does.

Although I agree with what you said, no way was he getting up at 800 let alone 8.

 

Fury is a joke, in my opinion.

Great achievement to beat Wlad. The fight was shite but he still went there and beat him. He didn’t school him etc and never took a rematch which was frustrating.

Wilder did turn out to be awful but Fury did fight him when he was feared, so you have to give him credit for that.

Hopefully him and AJ have a fight.

Mediocre era in my opinions with unnecessary rematches and trilogy’s and a lack of activity

Glad both are fighting different opponents first just to drag things out even longer. They tried doing this with Joshua and Wilder 2 years ago and went tits up.

 

This really has the feel of an English Football League Trophy match between Morecambe v AFC Wimbledon.

Hopefully this fight is in Saudi at 4am UK time and £199.99 ultimate Box Office.

 

Hopefully they slap the Ebanie Bridges–Shannon Courtenay rematch on the undercard to generate some genuine buzz, because after all the Jake Paul circus and another round of cautious tune-ups, the main event’s going to need every bit of help it can get. Maybe one of them books Claressa Shields as the warm-up – zero chance of getting chinned and maximum sideshow appeal, or even Bosh Jnr.

I’ll obviously watch it, but I’ve got very little interest in the outcome at this stage.
