The sport of boxing needs proper governance as this is simply a disgrace based on a failed drugs test and 2 fights against an Egg Shell.

 

As fans we aren’t suprised by anything that goes on at the minute, not much makes sense it’s just one big corrupt mess at this point and there’s no one either able or willing to do anything about it, a race to the bottom for sure

The treatment or lack of it for drug cheats is so lapse how can we ever expect it to be a deterrent in the sport?
I listened to a interview this morning discussing the smith/matias situation, another one just swept under the carpet…

 

Every system/process within the sport needs a full overhaul, scrap the lot and start again….

At some point soon there will be a death involving someone with a drugs fail and the likes of Eddie will be stood round crying on camera saying it is a tragic accident.

He’s really done very little, has he even besten anyone noteworthy close to their prime ?
He’s pushing 30, has improved his boxing a little bit but he’s more or less a slugger like his dad was, his time is now if he’s going to challenge himself and step up a level.
Unfortunately I can’t see it. I like to watch someone in their prime test them selves, I’m not bothered if they lose, just give us some decent fights. If not just be quiet about the relatively little you have accomplished so far…

I wish more boxers would just boycott the WBC now like Crawford. They've even canceled Whittaker's mandatory against Buatsi because of Ben's 'WBC Silver Champion's obligations' just in time as Hearn stated he's not ready to fight Buatsi. Does Matchroom have shares in the WBC? Are the WBC a subscription based organisation? They've gone absolutely rogue in recent months.

 

It was the a WBC’s annual shindig the other week in Thailand, no doubt some shady deals got done in the hotels. Wonder if Crawford’s sanction fees were paying for the event.

With Crawford's sanctioning fees apparently still in the post, one imagines Eddie Hearn generously stepping in to keep the champagne flowing for Mauricio and the crew.Wouldn't surprise me if Eddie's tab alone bankrolled the full tour: posh dinners, Nana Plaza warm-ups, Soi Cowboy main event, and a late-night downgrade to the Thermae when the budget started feeling the pinch. All in the name of advancing the sport, of course. Pure class.

 

It's just the most weird organisation I've ever seen, and I worked for a granny porn baron once.

I had a look at the WBC site and their top story was a "Francophile title" bout between two Ukrainians in Ukraine. Their own definition of the Francophone title is for "predominantly francophone countries, states or territories" so lord knows how two Ukrainians qualify given they're still listed as living there. Sounds like another way to collect fees.

I only knew about the Thailand convention after seeing Joe Gallagher talking about being there to pitch for a new weight class between light heavy and cruiser, whilst he also collected a WBC "champion of life" belt. I like Joe and am very glad he fought off his illness this past year, but yet another weight class is bonkers and let's be honest, the very notion of Joe being in Thailand would have caused a few ban-level comments on here in the past.

 

The problem with professional bodies in any field is the leverage they hold once you’re inside the system. They get you to the point where you’ve invested years of work, money and reputation to earn accreditation, titles or status, and only then do the extra layers start appearing.

You think you’ve made it. You’ve got the belts, the letters after your name, the licence, the recognition. Job done. Except it isn’t. Suddenly there’s a new mandatory requirement, a new fee, a new programme, a new designation you must have to keep what you already earned. And because you need that accreditation to operate at the top level, you’re stuck paying.

Crawford spotted it. Undisputed champion, completed the sport, held all the recognised belts and then realised that holding them is actually an ongoing subscription. Sanctioning fees, mandatory obligations, constant payments just to stay legitimised by organisations that already took their cut on the way up. At some point you look at it and think – this is a racket.

It’s no different in other professions. I’ve been rinsed year after year by professional bodies, first one, then two, at one point three, all promising credibility. You finally qualify and think you can sit back and focus on the work, only for new compulsory hoops to appear. Miss them and your accreditation, licence or standing is suddenly at risk.

Then others see how easy it is. They set up rival bodies offering alternative accreditations, claiming to be different and eventually they become exactly the same. Same fees, same leverage, same slow squeeze.

It’s the biggest long con going and once you’re bound into it, it’s almost impossible to escape. Which is why I respect Crawford. He looked at the system from the top and said enough. It won’t change anything, these organisations will always find another champion to monetise, but at least someone finally called it what it is.
