Honestly I'm much happier Bud is just retiring instead of wasting everyone's time with Canelo rematch for an easy paycheck.

 

I wouldn't mind the rematch itself, both guys are on the way out anyways. Scattering the titles does little for the division.
But overall Crawford has been a drag on boxing. His career has played out in a ridiculously slow pace and it takes forever for him to make good fights. Fighting once a year, ugh...

 

Nah. Let the division move forward, let guys like Iglesias, Sheeraz, Pacheco get their shots. The writing is on the wall for the Bud/Nelo rematch, which would happen in september. 39 year old Crawford who have no future in the divison holding the belts for 1 more year would only waste everyone's time. The only intriguing prospect for him was to roll the dice for his 5th division championship at MW, but that scenario went out of the window the minute Janibek popped.

Inactivity is frustrating, but that's been the par for the course for most fighters since pandemic. (Unless you have the drawing power of Canelo or Inoue) Him being ducked by the entire PBC universe (bar Porter) for 5 years didn't help either.

 

I guess, and its going to happen now anyways. I just think that if the titles are tied up, some of those guys might actually fight each other instead of waiting for vacant titles.

I dont really see much of a difference between there being a bunch of paper titlists in the division vs Crawford sitting there idly. Also, Bob Arum is also to blame for Crawford not getting the PBC crossover fights. Bob kept every meaningful fight in-house, and he only worked with PBC when they sent their guys over as B-sides on Top Rank cards.
This has been a massive problem since HBO and SHO left. Back on those channels, all of the promoters would get a chance to make fights, and this meant that they often worked together. Now for nearly a decade we have had promoters with exclusive rights to their respective networks, so we basically never get the big fights that we want.

 

Arum is to blame for a lot of things, but not for Crawford's situation at 147. The original plan was for Pac to pass the torch to Bud, but Manny left to join the PBC cylce after Crawford resigned with Top Rank. Arum would've loved to make Crawford vs Taylor (which would've been in-house and been huge in UK in 2021, as undisputed vs undisputed), but Josh Taylor wanted no part of it and continue to stay at 140 while publicly acknowleding that he's struggling to make weight. DSG and Thurman were both quoted rejecting offers to fight Crawford, Spence spent years telling everyone he wasn't interested because Bud was on the "wrong side of the street" while Porter proved that any fight can be made if both sides want it bad enough.

His situation was pretty similar to GGG's at MW between 2010-2016 actually.

 

And at the same time, the moment Bud left Arum he got the Spence fight. And I remember Crawford being very unhappy with Arum towards the end, who seemingly was blocking fights from happening.
Like I said, Arum was not going to let Crawford go over to PBC for a big fight, and PBC were not going to let their big names go over to Top Rank.

 

I happen to think the reason Spence finally went for the Crawford fight was because he had noone else to beat at PBC, but It's a minor point we can agree to disagree on.

 

And... Crawford was no longer with Top Rank. My point is that no matter how much either man would have wanted that fight, both promoters would have blocked it due to their broadcasting rights. PBC was happy to send guys over to ESPN on top rank cards when those guys were on their way out, and absolutely would have done so with Spence if he was on his way out too.
