It's a question I've been asking myself for the longest time and when carrying out my own research I've come up with a few different answers now I want to hear what everyone else is saying. When I ask for tactical the kinda thing I'm looking for is.... The ability to breakdown fights analytically. Normally solid game-plans. Ability to analyse fighters & fighter styles. Solid understanding of fundamentals & fight control. Just to name a few things that spring to mind, when considering these things some of the coaches that spring into my mind in no particular order is.... Eddy Reynoso. Derrick James Bomac. Ben Davison (Maybe) Virgil Hunter. Who do you guys think is the best in the sport right now?
Ben Davison hires a literal youtuber who has never boxed in his life to be his tactical advisor so both he and his hired youtuber are complete frauds
Vergil is over rated… He probably took the last few good fights Khan had left in him away from him by trying to turn a twitchy athletic fighter like Khan into a cerebral type…it wasn’t a bad idea on paper, but I feel like Khan under Roach would have outclassed and blasted on Algieri rather than having a close fight trying to play jab and grab… Ward was great, and I have no doubt Verge was part of that, but that’s not enough for me to rank him up there with the best. I’d probably go with Robert Garcia right now.
It's hard to tell with generational talents, because you rarely see what they'd have been without the right trainer. The only really good example I can think of where a trainer was definitely responsible for taking a generational talent and maximizing him was with Steward and Lewis, because we saw Lewis before Steward. Is Usyk the finished product he is because of his team? Or because he's a generational great who would have maximized his potential under any decent trainer? No way to tell.
