Better longevity is secondary. Think Hopkins Jones.

Pac won titles in 8 divisions, I don’t think he’s better than Floyd.

Would you pick Floyd over Loi or Ike Williams in Marciano era ?
    I wouldn’t

How close are Marciano and Ward when it comes to greatness? Is there anyone out there willing to make the case for Ward over Marciano?

I think that Floyd’s absolute prime was between LW-LWW.

Back then, there were less divisions and same day weigh-ins.

So he’d probably have been a WW.

But what I was saying, is that there’s been lots of great fighters in each weight class that Floyd fought in.

So because he fought in so many divisions, then throughout history, Floyd would have had a bigger group of fighters to have fought.

Floyd never was a big cutter. He would’ve fought part of his career at 135 in any era. Possibly 126 if he left the ams early.

This isn’t relevant to what we’ve been talking about.

If we listed potential opponents for both of them, I’m sure they’d have won some and lost some. Apart from that Floyd would have had a bigger pool of greater fighters to have fought.

I think he’d have mostly been a lightweight.
Rocky dominated a weak 50s heavyweight scene but still dominated.

I wouldn’t pick many cruisers over him either, which is only fair on the rock.

LW is very deep yes but I wouldn’t pick Floyd to be a dominant lightweight in many eras except the 80s.
He’d be quite far away from the best from the 40s to to the 70s

Rocky has a case for being on the same level of fighter as Floyd

    It is relevant

Rocky would dominate most cruisers, and cruiser has been a thing for a long time now. He dominated his own era of heavies too and would be very competitive in others despite being the smaller man.

Floyd isn’t beating Loi, Williams, Gans, Duran, Ortiz, Leonard, I’d favour Buchanan at his best over him.

Longevity and resume is secondary in my mind

    There’s nothing to suggest that.

Especially with a same day weigh-in.

He wouldn’t have been mostly a LW.

He wouldn’t have been a LW in his late 20’s onwards, with a same day weigh-in.

Rocky has no case for being on the same level.

You have already admitted that Floyd has the better resume.

You also know that he was much more skilled with better longevity.

There’s nothing really more to say.

You could give me 10 fantasy opponents for Floyd.

I might say that IMHO, he’d have beaten all of them.

You could then give me 10 more, where I may think that he’d have lost to all of them.

    It doesn’t matter.

We could go back and forth on that for hours.

I don’t think that Floyd is the GOAT.

But using criteria which I’ve always used, which is fair, Floyd has to rank higher than Rocky.

If he’s at WW he has Armstrong, Gavilán, Robinson, Palomino, Hearns, Napoles, Duran, Benitez, Griffith, Cokes, Loi, Rodriguez, Basilio.

He’d do ok in the 60s but he’s only near the top around his own era realistically, again WW is deep but who would you favour over Rocky at cruiser ? And then he can be competitive at heavyweight too depending on who’s around.

    It isn’t relevant.

List the best CW’s of all time.

Then list the best fighters who fought in the weight classes that Floyd fought in.

If we listed all of the best fighters who Floyd could have fought in history, then again, his list would be way bigger than Rocky’s.

Yes, longevity may not be the number 1 factor.

The staple ones would be ability and resume/wins.

    Resume and longevity again…so what?

Rocky as a small man dominated at heavy in a weak era, he’d dominate almost anyone at cruiser outside of Usyk and Holyfield. Not as deep no,

He has a real chance of beating Ali too, without being favourite, not bad for the little T rex is it.

talking of weak eras, look back through all the LW, and WW’s again and tell me you think Floyd would be favourite against many of them? Pacquiao is the only one that could compare with them from Floyd’s own weak era, and Floyd avoided him, and Pac wouldn’t beat them either.

Resume, Resume Resume of a carefully managed protected fighter in a weak era, Rocky’s the better fighter

    This is my point.

Look at the fighters you’ve listed.

    And that’s only at WW.

Rocky would have been a modern day CW.

The CW division isn’t that old.

The list of CW’s that we could list, wouldn’t be of the same calibre as the guys who you listed. And the list wouldn’t be as big.

    Have I not said this?

You want to compare the best CW’s of all time, to the best guys who fought between SFW-WW??
