Usyk parts ways with Riyadh Season; Wilder fight on PBC?

No, I didn't forget his cruiser career. Include it by all means, but none of them were proper heavyweight contenders.
I wouldn't list "Qawi, Tillman, Parkey, DeLeon" among Evander Holyfield's credentials to be heavyweight great either. And we know he doesn't need them.

The facts are Usyk hasn't cleaned up, and hasn't defeated any young or prime undefeated challengers above 200 pounds. Now, people are saying he doesn't have to, and he can go off and fight some shot, old, more-often-that-not-now defeated Wilder.
Both Wardley AND Kabayel are credible, very credible, challengers still probably (certainly Wardley) in their primes.

It's not all Usyk's fault that some credible boxers over the past 5 years at heavyweight didn't get title shots. Not Usyk's fault at all. But in 2025 and 2026 he has been in a position to give one or two very deserving guys a shot, and he's looking the other way.

They don't have to be heavyweight contenders. The facts, again, are that Usyk has had 13 title fights, 11 against fellow titlists. He is great. That is all. If you think he is not a great heavy...who cares? So he's a great cruiser who has beaten the best heavies on earth. Distinction without a difference.

look, Usyk has nothing else to prove. He’s been 100% pure class. But if he wants to spend the rest of his career fighting American has beens, drop the belts. Giving Wilder a title shot over Kabayel is sort of an insult to the sport.

 

Indeed . Nobody would say a word when usyk would drop the belts and then do some low profile fights for fun . Its also a shame wbc supports this ukrainian game .

 

He already dropped a belt for Wardley. The WBC granted him a voluntary defense against Wilder. The IBF/WBA haven't called him for a mandatory. He's following the rules. If you have a problem with it, you need to direct your ire at Maricio and the sanctioning bodies.

It's obvious why Usyk is doing all this. Wardley doesn't deserve ****. He got gifted a stoppage by the worst ref in the business. His resume is a bunch of domestic level guys, a prospect level guy who beat his ass for 99.9% of their fight, and coked up Parker. Kabayel has a legit resume, but he's a nobody, unfortunately. No money to be made with him whatsoever.

Coming to America gets Usyk's name out there and it lets him talk up the war and what's going on in Ukraine. His country is still in the **** and kinda needs the backing of the USA. Our shitbird, pedophile, Putin stooge of a President has been waffling on that support for an entire year. Usyk fighting over here puts all that out in the news and maybe gins up some more support. Throw in getting to finish off the 3rd big name of the era, regardless of how washed he is, and it's an easy decision.

And for the people saying Turki would obviously shell out tons of money for a fight with Wardley, nonsense. Turki said absolutely no money for a fight with Parker who is much more well known and liked than Wardley. The only guy he has ever mentioned paying Usyk to fight at this point is Itauma. Yet another guy who doesn't deserve a fight (at this point) with Usyk. Usyk is a man alone. He has no rivals left. He's done it all. At this point it's just throwing bones to guys where he doesn't get what he's worth. Though I imagine after his Wilder pit-stop he'll manage to find a legitimate fight to participate in. This is Usyk we're talking about. His entire career has been him finding tough fights, putting himself in the hardest positions, and coming out on top anyway because he's just that special.

 

Kabayel and his team have done an absolutely horrendous marketing job, and now he's fighting a dude (Knyba) whose best win is Richard Lartey.

The only two interesting fights for Usyk are Wardley and Itauma, and none of them deserve to fight Usyk right now.

Wilder and Ruiz are both bigger names and purses, and a way to gain some notoriety from dismissive American pundits and fans. From purely a marketing perspective this move makes sense.

But would I rather see him fight a Wardley. Itauma or Kabayel instead of Wilder?

If you believe he couldn't beat Wardley and Itauma, then reconsider your understanding of boxing.

Usyk has fought difficult opponents fight after fight since the start of the CW World Series of Boxing. Chad Witherspoon was possibly the easiest, and he was a last minute replacement for Usyk's first fight at HW - a guy who significantly outweighed Usyk.

Usyk is obviously looking to gain more viewers in the USA, and Deontay Wilder is the right opponent. Why does he want to open up the US market? Maybe he wants to do a Jake Paul fight later? Maybe something else. Regardless, it isn't ducking.
