Look, most of you hate the guy and I get it, he is not a likeable chap. But, I don't give a toss about the personal stuff, he is one of the most talented Heavyweights I haver ever seen and seeing the shape (round is a shape) he's in in that latest released training video, has made me somewhat depressed to think that his career now looks likely to go out like a wet fart. What awaits the twilight of the career of Gypsy King, a fighter who has inarguably already wasted a large portion of his talent through drink and drugs since, at the latest, the Klitschko fight? 1) Comeback against some 3rd rate heavy. I believe that if he comes back against some fighter outside the top 20 or 30, he probably still has enough to win, but there is an excellent chance he will look seriously unimpressive doing it. 2) Big money fight. He gets beat, I'm pretty confident, by anyone in the top 10 at this point barring Derek Chisora or maybe Gassiev, if you consider these guys to be top 10 at all. 3) He can't stop. Fury is a nut. I dont know if he knows what to do with himself when he isnt fighting, which is why he tries to recreate the high he gets from the sport by actually getting high on coke. Therefore, even after he inevitably gets beaten by a couple of good fighters I suspect he will remain on the circuit fighting in freak shows and exhibitions, looking increasingly flabby and unimpressive until he literally cannot fight anymore and he appears to be something approximating WingsofRedemption. 4) Demise. What will he do when he can no longer fight? Personally, I'll be amazed if he sees 60. ....... Maybe I'm wrong but to me this looks to be the most likely path for Fury now. I hope he proves I DKSAB or prophecising.
The biggest problem we should have with Fury is not the personal stuff its how his personal stuff ruined the HW division for a very long time. We've got a lot of great HWs in their 30s who haven't gotten their chance and the man mainly responsible is this guy.
I don't think he'll be back. He has quoted 250 million, and he doesn't command near that. Without Joshua, who may not come back now, there is no mega fight out there at all, and no big name he has a chance of beating. He has flat-out said that he is done with the 5 million dollar fights...that is what he will get for the Makhmudovs of the world.
You can’t just point the finger at one fighter a lot of the other divisions suffer from lack of activity, for example Bivol with one mandatory fight in 7 years ! Usyk fighting 8 times in 6 years Fury fighting 9 times in 6 years and Joshua fighting 11 times in 6 years, they don’t fight as often to protect there PPV sales and the sanctioning bodies are a complete joke when it comes to ordering mandatory fights. Boxing needs a complete makeover we have more belts now than anytime in Boxing but we have less title fights for the fighters sitting in mandatory positions !
Bivol and Beterbiev largely cleaned out LHW over the same time period. They as a group did what Fury/AJ and Wilder failed to do. Who cares about mandatorys? I do not believe in the alphabet bodies ability to choose opponents. Thats not truly the issue.
So in your words there are a lot of great Heavy’s out there in there 30s who haven’t gotten there chance, but you don’t care about mandatory fighters who have earned there shot at the relevant Champions and are just sitting waiting around for sometimes years ! Ok As for Bivol and Beterbiev largely cleaning out LHW that is not true,in the same time period that Bivol fought 1 mandatory fight Beterbiev had fought 4 mandatory’s and 2 Champions,Beterbiev was the one who cleaned out the division,Bivol has still only fought 1 Champion at LHW .
This happens with a lot of boxers….look at wilder right now. So no, the guy who delayed, conned and lied to the boxing world consistently, I don’t feel any specific sorrow for that guy.
Some of the defending responses to that video were lame. Yes, he's looked like a soggy bag of milk for years now, but he's in his late 30s now, so he'll pay for his lack of fitness more than in his younger years. I can only imagine Fury will expand back up to 400 lbs again whenever he truly decides to retire.
Well, that's a fair point... but his showmanship put him on a par with then then-also-much-beloved-but-also-much-vilified Ali. And those two guys are more responsible for selling tickets and TV (now streaming) deals than most other boxers of our lifetimes. Fury revived global boxing fandom from the ash heap left by the very gentlemanly and very dull Klitschko Bros.
Yet everyone is kissing Usyk's backside when he's now doing the same thing. Sanctioning bodies need to stop pandering to these fighters and give everyone a fair shot.
Unless Fury fights a serious fighter, at least a fringe contender and soon! No one will bother with him and understandably so. That said, I’ve always wanted to see Fury fight Zhang for some reason.
Hard to feel bad for him if he goes off the rails when he really does retire. He was lucky to be able to come back from letting himself go to **** and lucky Usyk wasn’t around back then. He did more than he deserved to do really
