Greater fighter: Kostya Tszyu or Donald Curry

2 HOFers who were top P4P fighters at the time, undisputed in their weight class, and were excellent boxer punchers known for their sharp and accurate surgical-like punches. Both also had extensive amateur background. Who has beaten greater opposition and who was the better H2H fighter between the two in your opinion?

Good question actually. I like Tzyu a lot and from what I've seen of Curry he was a solid boxers so really no wrong answer here. Gun to my head I would say Tszyu has the slightly stronger resume with wins over prime Judah, Chavez, Gonzalez, Hurtado etc. But I might slightly favor Curry H2H just because he seems like the more complete boxer and more technically sound. But would love to hear the thoughts of people who are more knowledgeable.

 

For me, it's Curry. H2H, I would also take Curry but, that's mostly becasue Curry was significantly bigger and a natural WW while Koysta fought his entire career at 140. P4P, I like Curry because he had success at two weight classes and was at one time, pound for pound number one which I don't think Koysta was ever even in the top five of his era.

 

Chavez was absolute trash when Tszyu beat him and MAG was on the way out.

 

Curry had the better wins but Tsyzu had more depth in his resume. Both became undisputed in the 3 belt era but Curry had success and won a belt at another weight class. It's pretty even but if I had to choose I'd pick Tsyzu, 14-2(11 KO's) in world title fights vs Curry's 9-5(7 KO's) in title fights. Curry had some pretty bad losses, makes Tsyzu's embarrassing loss to Vince Phillips and quit job vs Ricky Hatton in his last fight look tame in comparison. That being said, Curry in 1985 is h2h one of the best Welterweights to ever live, he was p4p number 1 for a reason.

 

Still good wins just based on name value alone and MAG was a solid fighter

 

I get that he needs name value wins because his resume is basically Judah plus a bunch of mostly C level wins plus two unavenged loses.

Curry and its not remotely close. Curry was considered on par with Hagler in the mid-80s. At no point was Tszyu held in such regard.

Curry had a far more dominant peak and amassed better wins.

I can't possibly see what the argument for Tszyu would be.

Both guys were kind of similar in that they were front runners, but Curry was just the far better talent.

 

Outside of Sterling what are Currys best wins?

 

Except that Kostya would knock him colder than a welldigger's ass.
