Evander Holyfield Vs Tim Witherspoon, Peak for Peak

I went with Holyfield by a decision. Ferdie Pacheco once said if spoon was fit and motivated he’d give Holyfield “ fits “ and I agree. This was on showtime championship boxing in 1989 when Holyfield fought Adilson Rodriguez. After the fight the announcers did a run down of possible future opponents for him and spoon was among them. That said, I think Holyfield’s heart, style, and conditioning would see him to a points win but it wouldn’t be easy

 

I’d be very unsurprised to see Tim Witherspoon outpoint Evander. Good fight!

 

He was definitely a hard man to beat when he was in shape and even still sometimes when he wasn’t.

 

I agree and have said the same thing for decades. Some have said that the Tyson camp didn’t want anything to do with him, although a lot of that was probably Spoon’s legal dispute with Don King which went on for years

 

Witherspoon could've beat both Holyfield and Bowe at his peak unfortunately after falling out with Don King there was no way he was going to get a big fight again.

Witherspoon was ranked as a top 5 Heavyweight between 1984 to 1990, even if he had a bad blip vs Bonecrusher in their 2nd fight he still should've got a shot vs Tyson or Holyfield. But unfortunately as i said after the Don King fall out he was never going to get a big fight.

 

He wouldn't trouble Jack Roper

 

Holyfield no doubt, Witherspoon was good but Holyfield would have beaten him, too smart & durable, he would have manoeuvred away from that looping right hand & his combination punches & general work rate would have subdued Witherspoon down the stretch.

 

Witherspoon's loss to Everett Bigfoot Martin put pay to him getting another title shot, that was a bad defeat.

 

It was a surprising defeat but Witherspoon was atill a top 5 rated Heavyweight between 1986-1990.

And was still rated number 7 in 1991 before losing to Everett in 1992.

There was a window of opportunity for Witherspoon to fight Holyfield for the title before he lost to Bowe.

I also would've liked to of seen Witherspoon face Lewis in the mid 90s when Lewis was on the comeback trail after the McCall loss.

Witherspoon got rated in the top 10 again in 1996 ? and had a good performance vs Mercer who was fresh off having a very competitive fight vs Lewis.

Witherspoon vs Lewis in 1996 would've been interesting IMO.

 

If Tim stays disciplined and keeps up a high work rate ( Holmes fight) ,he could make it very close and get him self a close decision.
But Holyfield consistency and engine makes this one of Spoons harder fights.
