It's all of it combined. Yes, Shavers hits harder than Rahman. But Jerry never had to fight a guy that had that much of a reach, height and power that Rahman had. All of the guys Quarry lost to had at least one of those attributes. Rahman has all 3.
The Lewis win was a total fluke against an unprepared Lennox that was out of gas after a few rounds. The immediate rematch answered any questions about that. Rahman was a guy who lost to an obese James Toney and got iced not once, but twice by the plodding Oleg Maskaev. All while in his prime. And, an over the hill Holyfield out-muscled Rahman and beat him up.
I would say Quarry for me, think of the grit , determination and heart, he had it by the truck load. Rahman while good in lots of ways, did not have the same for me. Remember the Family moto, "there's no quit in a Quarry"
Quarry would have a field day with Maskaev. Maskaev is probably one of the top three worst fighters in history to hold a belt. And, prime Quarry would be a live dog against the versions of Toney and Holyfield that Rahman faced. They were both far past their prime when they fought Rahman.
Exactly correct. If a fat James Toney can at times clown Rahman, Quarry absolutely would be a handful for Rahman. I like Rahman but he was a pretty raw fighter. Yes, he had a lot of physical gifts but Quarry was a friggen animal and beat plenty of guys that were bigger, stronger and heavier punchers.
I'm not ever sure Shavers hits appreciably harder than Rahman. Rahman was more disciplined and sold out less on his punches. Shavers swung from another zip code, sort of a latter day Satterfield. High risk/high reward approach.
Maskaev was a good boxer who was always up or in the fight on the cards (other than against Peter). His loses were basically from getting his chin cracked. Quarry failed to knockout an Old Patterson. You can do the math there.
I don't like using the term "glass chin" because it seems like it is over used today, but I feel Maskaev has one. I think Maskaev vs. Quarry is a closer fight than Rahman vs. Quarry. If I had a gun to my head I would barely think Maskaev can pull it off.
Nothing is a fluke. Rahman KO'd one of the three greatest heavyweights of all time. I assume we are matching these two at their respective best. And if so, Rahman's best was far and away better.
I do agree with you there. Rahman by far beat the best fighter. Not to get off topic too much but I remember being in my 20's and broke but drunkenly watching Lewis vs Rahman 1 at my shitty apartment and thinking that Lewis was going to blow out Rahman in a couple of rounds. What a huge upset and one that I will never forget.
