If Canelo had fought in Benitez’ era, with same day weigh-ins, he’d have fought mostly between MW-LHW.

Look at who some of his potential opponents would have been.

It doesn’t matter if Canelo had a better overall career.

You don’t value wins based upon that.

You value the wins based on where they were at the time.

Manny Pacquiao is one of the greatest fighters of all time. But I wouldn’t say that he was Floyd’s best win.


Canelo was considered the number 1 fighter at one point?

In a weaker era.

Benitez wasn’t, because he was surrounded by prime ATG’s at various weights.


Cotto wasn’t better than Benitez. But Benitez faded, due to his lifestyle and his terrible mismanagement.


Yes, it’s theoretical to wonder how he’d have done under different circumstances. Of course.

However, we know who he beat. And even in losing efforts against Leonard and Hearns, we can see how great he was.


Sanchez is a bad example. Around the same age that Canelo was struggling with Trout and Floyd, Sanchez had beaten prime ATG fighters.

Canelo has no win that’s better than Sanchez’ best wins.

In the modern era, Benitez would have spent most of his career between WW-JMW.

In Benitez’ era, with no SMW division having much recognition until the late 80’s-early 90’s, and with same day weigh-ins, Canelo would have spent most of his career between MW-LHW.


So let’s look at their potential opponents.

We can list some if you wish.


Canelo would have had a much harder task.

Because again, in the 70’s and 80’s, he’d have been in his prime at MW-LHW.

Look at his HUGE rehydration weights.

Then take into account that there was no SMW division.

Apply context.

He would have fought at MW, with a same day weigh-in.

After that, he’d have been fighting at LHW.

He apparently weighed 170 plus pounds against Floyd. In the ring. On fight night.

So in his mid 20’s, he’d have been at LHW. If not sooner.

So imagine him fighting some of the LHW’s of the 80’s.

The MW’s of the 70’s-80’s.

He’d have been in the mix with Marvin etc.

Possibly against Spinks before he moved up to HW.
