I haven’t watch it yet, but the ingles did want a bigger cut than the going rate. Even from journeyman and starters.

Several of his fighters did complain “it’s just about money with them”. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t, maybe it should be.

They used to charge 25% manager and 10% coach fee from all fighters signed with them, that was pretty common practice back then I think. They also used to have houses etc that they would rent to the fighters who were travelling to train with them.

You'll be hard pressed to find many people who knew or worked with Naz who have got a good word to say about him.

This is a man who caused a serious car crash through his own reckless behavior and then when he saw what he had done, ran away and left two people to die to try and save his own skin instead of trying to help. Something he has shown zero remorse for, despite his victims suffering serious life changing injuries.

Horrible excuse of a human being.

Whilst I’m not really a fan of Naz the person, you can’t be handing over 10% manager and 25% trainer once you’re getting into million pound and multi-million pound purses. By the time you factor in expenses, tax, and everything else, you’re walking away with well under 50% net, and if you’re only fighting 2–3 times a year it adds up fast.

As good as Brendan was for Naz, he wasn’t worth £1m+ a year in fees when he also had a stable of other rising stars coming through. At a certain level the percentages just stop making sense, and it has to become a flat fee arrangement.

Think the figure is £100,00. From then on its negotiable.
The 25% managers fee and 10% trainers is the standard from the BBBC.
Some will take less but by the board rules the above is what each person is entitled to.

    Good interview from Jonny there.

Split would have been 25% to Manager and 10% to coach, I do kind of agree with you about the flat fee thing to a certain extent but think of it this way from the coaches point of view, at the start you are spending 10 hours a week with a fighter, for say 8-10 weeks camp and then you are given your 10% of a basic boxer purse of £1000-£1500 for a 4 or 6 round fight that's £100-£150 for all that time this may not include travelling with the boxer sparring etc, surely when the fighter reaches the heights these same coaches who spend all this time basically losing money are entitled to actually earn a decent wage, especially if they have been with them from the start?

Exaclty this. A BBBoC trainer is entitled to a sum of up to, but not more than, 10% of the boxers gross purse, when the gross purse is no more than £10,000. When the boxers purse exceeds £10,000 the terms of the engagement may make provision for the sum being received by the trainer. In other words, it’s subject to negotiation between boxer and trainer. Unless you have a golden goose, most trainers are earning **** all from their professional boxers.

If anything that split makes it worse at world level. The 10% coach fee is basically what Billy Graham took Hatton to court over and Ricky ended up settling, plenty said it was too much at that level.

Same thing with Mayweather Snr, I remember a fighter walking away from him because he wanted a $2m flat fee, probably De La Hoya. Once you’re talking those kinds of purses the numbers stop being “fair reward” and start being fantasy.

The 25% manager cut I can understand for a lad coming through small halls, but by the time Naz boxed Wayne McCullough he was an HBO star, Adidas sponsored, the whole thing. Brendan was a brilliant trainer, but he wasn’t a super-agent, and he was out of his depth in those rooms.

And even if they’d binned the 25% by that stage, he still would’ve made a couple of million off Naz’s peak years, which is probably as much as he made from Nelson, Rhodes, Witter and Brook combined. Personally I think he got greedy, same way Mayweather Snr convinced himself he was worth $2m for one fight.

Although Naz’s ego was in the stratosphere by that point and his brothers were no more qualified than Brendan, he probably overpaid them too. But once you’re at that level you need to be controlling the whole show yourself, which is basically what he ended up doing.

But I get your point, and that’s exactly why that contract structure is still basically the industry standard, unless you're managed and promoted by Don King.

Edit : Any fighter paying Sam Jones anything close to 25% needs a lobotomy.

So do school teachers take a cut of your salary once you graduate to become a doctor?

Naz (like Floyd later) made his money from people hating him and paying to see him get ko’d.

I can see people don’t realise and that hate still exists lol

Iirc i think this was the issue between Ricky Hatton and Billy Graham, Ricky's family wanting him to come away from the 10% trainer fee

Do school teachers continue to spend hours a week teaching you after you leave school?
