I am now just slightly more comfortable with him at 15 than 16-20. And that's not even comfortable because I also didn't like him. I kind of do now though. And I'm not comfortable with that either.

 

Top 20? Perhaps. Not sure he's above Pernell Whitaker who did beat an undefeated Chavez and arguably beat a prime De La Hoya. Once you reach the top 15 things get too hectic. Records, too deep. Top-end wins leave Floyd's in the dust. Around 15 the likes of Tony Canzoneri and Archie Moore come to mind - guys who simply did too much work for Floyd to rate above them.

A lot of talk about ability in this thread. Sure, especially at 130, Floyd was a nightmare, but that's another topic.

 

If the ref is the one from Daiki Kameda vs Daisuke Naito, Floyd is done for lmao.

 

Whitaker is nowhere near Floyd in resume.

I think he's top 20....................top 10 is locked down and no modern fighter IMO will ever break in.

 

Yeah, it's rough to get in the top 5. I think top 10 is potentially achievable but it'd have to be an incredible era and a guy who just doesn't care and fights all the time.

Modern fighters can definitely get to the top 5 on a best ever fighters tho imo. Floyd's basically there anyway, and like, 6 of my top 7 would be considered modern all things considered.

 

I don't have Louis top 10, but I think this is fascinating so I'll do it. I've always felt we could be overrating Louis in a P4P sense and we just rank him top 10 out of guilt or some sense of prestige, and I never felt comfortable even with my #14 ranking.

So Joe Louis is 45-3, and Floyd Mayweather is 26-0. So Louis has the clear advantage in terms of depth, even if you include men that were ranked at the time both guys fought them (Floyd beat 23 and I lost proper count of Louis' at around the 35 area).

Interesting to see is how many times Floyd beat the best guy around. Not counting ring champions, he ties Louis' 7 wins over divisional #1s. Add the ring champs (Braddock, Baldomir, Hatton, Marquez) and Louis is at 8, while Floyd jumps to 10. Add Canelo being the #2 to Floyd's #1 in a division with no ring champion, and it's 11.

But since Baldomir is in no way Billy Conn's equal, despite both men being the best guys for Joe and Floyd to fight at the time, we're gonna have to compare wins.
