When the referee lets one boxer fight dirty it is not a fair fight. Ward won at least three obvious fights he would have lost otherwise.

Well we're seeing the usyk situation differently. The punch came from below and pulled up and presumably pulled at least the cup up in a way that the punch had the impact of a low blow. His reaction certainly was instant and that of a low blow and not that of a body shot.

Had the impact been that of a body shot it would have been slower and different. Noone can control reactions at that speed.

Also it was legally low and dubois didn't do that for the first or last time in a fight by far... Makes it quite unquestionable to me.

Regarding doping i have to agree.

Apart from that i think if referees were taking off points by the third or fourth Clinch, boxing might have a renaissance for casuals. It would by a completely different experience and have great mass appeal.

But still it is very easy for me to make a difference between clinching and getting a low blow ko, clear cheating UDs, many headbutts. With the amount of what he was able to get away with at the top and in the spotlight he is pretty much up there with anyone who did that. It's the number one reason anyone still talks about him. You have to earn this, it's not like just any american boxer is treated like this. Doesn't happen to crawford, mayweather, porter, spence, leonard ...

Lol Usyk only took one borderline shot, Kovalev was nailed 4/5 times square in the nuts and Ward got a k.o victory. I'd forgotten about that. Has Ward ever addressed it!?

The fight was basically stopped due to cuts caused by Wards headbutts.. who cares if Ward was well ahead, it still doesn't take away from the fact he groped & butted his way through fights.. & let's not forget his excessive clinching in that one too.. & he was a SNAC fighter, they're all suspect.. yes there have been many great fighters who employed dubious tactics at times too but it still makes you ponder why they need to resort to it if they're so good in the the first place..

That’s probably the most convincing argument I’ve heard for the shot being low, but unfortunately I was born with the blessing of vision, I’m not arguing if it’s low or not because the referee deemed it low, but that kind of reaction is what you get when you get caught on the underneath of your sack and if you get caught in a way that means you need a few minutes to recover, you should have the expression and behaviour of someone who is feeling a sickness that consumes you in every way, that wasn’t what I saw, but I would expect to see someone basically fold in half and curl up, it looked like he was overselling it for me.
I think anyone who has seen the video in slow motion and still thinks he got hit in the plums are giving him the benefit of the doubt because he is Usyk.-
I don’t think that any correct implementation of the rules on repeated clinching or holding would have much effect on the popularity of the sport to the casual.
If you are suggesting that this would increase the likelihood of a decent exchange or a fighter taking a heavy shot, then in that case I would have agreed with you on that (in the past).
The casual observer has been drawn to boxing by the build up, the hype and the potential to see a knockout, and the reason why the casual boxing fans are now getting less and less is because of the rise of MMA and that new slap league thing, they can get their fix of a brutal knockout or dose of violence without having to be as invested in the fight as you are with boxing.
Boxing just doesn’t deliver as consistently for the casual and they don’t have to demonstrate the same level of knowledge when they discuss MMA or that slappy shite, when you hear the experts in MMA talking about fighting and the fight they could actually be mistaken for being a casual because they offer very little insight into the neuances of the fight, you could argue that it is because the sport doesn’t have the same history as boxing or you could argue that it’s because of raw aggression and directness of MMA, in boxing you have to understand how a fighter works and opening or doesn’t take an opportunity for the knockout because they don’t think they are ready, but in MMA they are pretty much only looking for the finish in every moment.
Basically I’m trying to make the point that if you are a casual fan there’s easier ways to get your fix than with boxing.
If you are saying that you can accept a certain level of cheating then I don’t agree with that, but if you’re saying that Ward received favourable treatment from the referee then I completely agree with you but that’s something that is part of boxing, the challenger isn’t on a level playing field with the champion and the champion has the right to fight and defend his title at home.

That was a harsh take by the Nordic Warrior. However, I've said for decades what an in the ring scumbag Ward was. If the officials, promoters and networks let him cheat then he will cheat. To top it all off, he's celebrated by the US media, fake news.
That Kovalev stoppage was utterly ridiculous and the Kessler fight an absolute travesty of justice.

The way i remember the fight, Ward emptied his tank trying to stay at distance of Kessler all night long. It's true he was ahead , but that's because he expanded all that energy. Kessler had plenty left and Ward was slowing down, hence the headbutts, because he refused to engage and wanted to protect his chin; disgraceful.

I watched it last week, Ward was pretty fresh and won on the outside and the inside. If anything Kessler was wilting and never landed anything that would suggest Ward's chin was in any danger. As far as the headbutts go the one in the 8th looked accidental and was ruled that way. the one in the 10th was more flagrant, Ward lunged his whole body leading with his head. Seemed like one of those accidental on purpose type of situations. Seemed unnecessary as he was so far ahead

My post is more so to point out some of the BS about the fight. Posters on here are acting like Ward was headbutting him from the first round and never would have won without them. He was firmly in front and dominated every facet of the fight before an accidental clash in the 8th and a headbutt he probably should have been penalized for in the tenth. At most he gets a point taken, gets a 9-9 round and the fight ends up the same way

Ward is pretty unpopular on this forum so this thread doesn't surprise me, I was not a fan of his when he was active. That said, I think there has been some mythology in the other direction to discredit him

Andre Ward was a dirty fighter who was allowed to foul his way to victory time and time again. That's true.

But it still takes some skill to pull that off, even with fixed officiating.
