Deontay Wilder vs Chris Byrd

You are way too caught up on the legend of Holyfield’s name bud.

Holyfield being 38 and Ortiz being 38 isn’t the same thing. Ortiz at 38 was in his 31st career match and in his prime as a professional boxer with relatively low mileage, he didn’t even turn pro until he was 30. Holyfield at 38 had a 16 year long career, 40+ matches, life-changing slugfests with the likes of Bowe and a heart condition that forced him into temporary retirement before he decided to come back.

Just watch their matches around the same timeframes, Ortiz looks considerably more energetic and lively than Holyfield.

 

And yet Holyfield was still fighting proper contenders and winning some - where Ortiz was fighting corpses of not particularly special fighters, and journeymen.

Seriously, look at Ortiz "run" up to Wilder...
Jennings - overrated as hell.
Scuba Scott - never fought again.
Tony Thompson - never fought again.
Dave Allen - bang average.
Daniel Martz?! Who?


Ortiz isn't in the same universe, nevermind the same ballpark.

 

He beat way better fighters than wilder. He’s not just troubling him, he’s dominating and stopping him.

Look at the other Pole Wilder fought, who gave him trouble, Spzilka. Anytime wilder got off the American circuit he either lost or struggled badly vs a journeyman. He was a good domestic fighter and that’s it.

 

You guys need to stop bringing up resumes and actually watch these people fight lmao. Its not Ortiz’s fault that he fought in an empty HW era.

 

It's his fault he didn't fight any other Top 10 contenders except for Jennings and was caught on PEDs which also slowed down his career.

I realized this last year

Most people on here have no idea how to evaluate a fighter without resume

Thats why they put so much emphasis into names on a resume

 

Jennings was #5 when Ortiz beat him. Two of the 4-5 people above Ortiz in the rankings were AJ (who ducked him when he was the WBA mandatory) and Joseph Parker (whose team straight up said Ortiz was a bad match-up).

And pls don’t bring up PEDs in defense of Evan Fields.

 

He fought lower tier opponents from an empty era...

It's not as if that excuse flies when you're not fighting better guys even though there are plenty around.

Watching them fight is great - but watching them fight dross only tells you what they're able to do against lesser opponents... To be rated highly at higher levels, you have to look good at higher levels - and Ortiz just hasn't.

 

I don't care about Evan Fields. We're talking about Luis Ortiz who only beat 1 Top 10 guys. And no, AJ didn't duck him when he was the WBA mandatory. Ortiz became WBA mandatory in December 2016. AJ won the WBA belt in April 2017. Ortiz would have challenged AJ for the belt after AJ was done with the IBF mandatory later that year or early 2018, but he was popped on PEDs and stripped of the mandatory status. He was also offered to fight AJ as a replacement for Miller, but he ducked him, even for the biggest payday of his life.

 

Then you probably weren’t much of a fan back then, because many of the “top guys” were avoiding Ortiz before Wilder finally took on him. So he did what he could do, and dominated the poor chaps that had the guts to take on him.

 

#5 in the WBA rankings maybe. He wasn’t rated 5 by The Ring
