I don't think Sanchez and Anderson are big potentials. Bakole was a potential and I actually believe his stories of beating Usyk in sparrings. The problem is, I don't think even then Bakole could sustain it for 12 rounds, like Chisora couldn't.

Now he definitely couldn't as he's gotten fat and slow.

Zhang and Bakole would be so dangerous if they had the discipline to diet properly and do cardio lol.

Yeah he had time to prepare for Adeleye, and vs Adeleye speed is more important than vs Joyce so I assume they went for that.

Full fight isn't on YT but this is highlights of Hrgovic at 230-235. I also think he's better when slightly lighter. He isn't a power puncher so the weight doesn't benefit him much, mostly just slows him down and reduces his stamina.

You didn't give a single argument where I'm wrong in the Dubois vs Hrgovic analysis.

Adeleye was only stopped by Wardley, who I consider one of top 5 punchers currently, and even that was a questionable stoppage. Joyce was only ever stopped by Zhang, and Zhang is stylistically a horrible matchup for Joyce. And Joyce beat Dubois and Parker. And Hrgovic took at least 9 out of 10 rounds vs Joyce.

Based on what do you say most people think Zhang beat him? If you look at YT comments of the full fight, most people acknowledge Hrgovic was the winner. Some even say they thought Zhang won by watching highlights and then changed opinion after watching full fight. And it doesn't even matter because anybody who actually watches the fight or at least looks up the punch stats knows that's false, Zhang only outscored Hrgovic on rounds 3,6 and 9, and even if you count the round 1 pulldown as a knockdown, like the judge mistakenly did, it's still not enough for a win. I explained it to the other guy. There's really no argument here.

And if you watch the fight (full fight, not highlights) it looks even more Hrgovic favored than the stats.

As for his career being unremarkable, yes, that's what happens when you're a dangerous fighter from a small country. I explained this in the OP and frankly people should already understand it anyway. He couldn't find opponents to fight even when they'd get the mandatory challenger position for IBF if they beat Hrgovic.

I would say it's only in small part his fault, his mistake was going pro too late compared to f.e. Parker who is about the same age.

But again, look at Zhang's career after a LOSS from Hrgovic. One would think the winner would deserve better fights, but that's how boxing is... it's a business first, sport second, and 1.4 billion China = more money than 4 million Croatia. Do you think people would be lying so much that Zhang won if he was himself from a small country? If Zhang was from a country even smaller than Hrgovic's Croatia we would listen to the opposite narrative.

The problem is when you outbox him Wardley can just start swinging wildly and the judge will wave hands and call it a TKO, so what's the point of outboxing him?

Imagine if when Hrgovic was cut against Joyce the judge stopped the fight like the Dubois fight.

Then if after that Hrgovic had the Adeleye fight too imagine if after the series of punches Hrgovic took in round 8 the judge waved hands and gave Adeleye a TKO victory.

Then we would be listening the narrative of how Hrgovic can't beat Joyce and how Adeleye knocked him out and how he was always garbage.

Even though we now know he could beat Joyce conclusively despite the cut and he not only handled the punches Adeleye threw at him, but dominated the last 20-30 seconds of the fight AFTER receiving all those punches AND proceeded to dominate the last 2 rounds also.

But if the judge stopped the fights the way I said we'd never know what could have happened. Just like we'll never know what would have happened the Dubois fight. And we'll never know what would have happened in Wardley's prematurely stopped fights.

As for Hrgovic's hype, I wrote to the other guy Hrgovic's pedigree before pro boxing so that's where the „hype“, if any, came from.

If he was from a bigger country he definitely would have been a champ already, and possibly unified.

I explained earlier in the thread Hrgovic's 2nd worst version was against Zhang because he wasn't mentally there as his dad had died and he was overtrained with Ronnie Shields as trainer.

His gas tank now with Abel in Adeleye fight looked perfectly fine to me, even the British commenters who generally dislike Hrgovic complimented it.

He was also with Abel against Joyce, and even on short notice he beat a volume puncher like Joyce on points.

So I don't know what people want from him when talking about his gas tank.

Even if I disagree I understand why you'd think Hrgovic would be the underdog against Usyk and Fury. I don't understand for Wardley and Kabayel, I think I made pretty good arguments why they're overrated, especially Wardley. I mean seeing how they robbed some other fighters with premature stoppages I know they could just rob Hrgovic the same way, but assuming an actually fair fight I don't see how Wardley would be the favorite.

And I especially don't understand why you'd see him as an underdog against Joshua or in a Dubois rematch. Hrgovic had the mitigating circumstances I mentioned in OP so wasn't at 100% yet he was still beating Dubois on points and got stopped in 8th by poor refereeing. Joshua was losing rounds against Dubois and got KO'd in 5th. All Hrgovic needed to defeat Dubois was to be healthy with good camp and fair refereeing. Even Dubois' advanced supplements wouldn't help, he was still losing rounds. And other than Dubois Hrgovic and Joshua share Molina and Zumbano as opponents, and they both dispatched them in a similarly dominant manner. But Dubois is the best opponent they both faced and Hrgovic unquestionably did better than Joshua despite not being at a 100%.

    I don't believe it.

Even IF a few didn't want to fight him (which I see no evidence of) the idea that nobody better than McKean or DeMori was willing to fight him for that mando after Zhang, for example? Nah... And with a potential mandatory available to pick up (even if it clearly wasn't going to be usable for a while), especially, you can generally be sure someone will be interested.

The "avoided fighter" is pretty much always a myth - there is almost always a better explanation.

We know some fighters duck difficult fights.
We know some fighters demand too much money and it makes it hard for them to get fights made.
We know some guys expect to jump the queue without having to work up.

Is there anything about Hrgovic that makes him so scary that almost everyone decent would want to avoid him? No... Definitely not.

This isn't a barrier to success.

It makes it harder, and it makes in unfair - but it doesn't stop guys from making it.

    What it does mean is:
    - It takes longer to build up draw.
    - Which means the overall purses will be smaller for longer, and the fighter will have to earn less than an equivalently able/proven fighter who brings more attention.

It's entirely possible to see how these fighters might sometimes:
    1) Price themselves out
    2) Get indignant at only being worth small-ish cuts
    3) Just decide that the risk isn't worth the money available and try looking for other fights

Do any of these too often and you'll start getting a reputation for being difficult and/or a waste of time, and less opportunities will come around.

You're also not wrong that going pro later leaves less time to get building through these issues - as does tending to fight once a year.

Should it be more difficult? In an ideal world, no.
Does that change that it's the reality and trying to fight it doesn't work? No.

Late to the party, probably someone said it before , but anyways:

You mention every diminishing detail of the wins of hrgovic's contemporaries and then neglect to mention that hrgovic should have lost against kabayel?

Ok you probably saw it differently, but even it was a win to you, how did you not mention that he was probably unconscious for multiple seconds in the fight? Walking around, not noticing his opponent to his left...

Did you mention him checking out of fights regularly, fighting with no purpose. How about getting punched around by adeleye...

There really is no reason to put hrgovic above kabayel or wardley at this point. He has to catch up first.

I appreciate longer essays on here a lot, but I don't like strong bias. When I feel that I might be biased I still try to see it from the other side and mention those points.

This sounded more like what a promoter of hrgovic might say :)

Too much drivel in the opening post to adress, but you can make any fighter sound bad by focusing exclusively on the bad parts.

Yes, Hrgovic didn't get the opportunities that fighters from UK and USA do, but that's no excuse. He isn't the first, certainly not the last.

Almost every single top MW from 2010 to 2015 outright ducked GGG. What did G do? He fought 3 or 4 times a year against weaker opposition and he whooped people's asses. And people started talking more and more about him after each fight and his opposition eventually got better.

Compare that to Hrgovic who opted to fight once a year, always put on lackluster performances and failed to win when it mattered the most. He barely eeked out a decision against Zhang who turns into a 280lbs statue after 4 rounds, couldn't deal with Dubois' dirty style and lost, struggled with Joyce who was coming off of a loss to Chisora and was almost put on ***** street by glorified journeyman Adeleye. He's shown nothing so far to suggest he's anymore than an average contender (which is perfectly fine btw). He wouldn't more than 2 or 3 rounds against Usyk and would be the clear underdog against Joshua, Fury, Parker, Kabayel and Wardley and probably in the Dubois rematch.
