Great fighters whose best single result was a draw

Packey McFarland vs Mike Gibbons. A few thought it was a draw, many thought Gibbons edged it, even more think McFarland edged it. I'm using it since Boxrec has it a draw.

Imagine being a former Lightweight at the tail end of your career, and you arguably beat a top 10 ATG Middleweight smack in the middle of his prime, literally just before said MW obtains the world title.

From what I’ve read in previous threads from those who have the full fight, they (particularly klompton) thought it was pretty shocking that so many had it a draw or for McFarland and that Gibbons should’ve won clearly. From the film we have I think he’s winning pretty comfortably. Apparently Gibbons also had to cut down to 147 on the day of the fight so he wasn’t 100% either, peak for peak at their natural weights probably wouldn’t be too competitive imo.

 

Given how divisive scorers were back then, I think it's fair to say that a lot of old time journalists and newspapermen didn't know how to score fights

 

In those days it was more the result of there being no system to declare a winner then the fight being some sort of tie under the definition we know.

Jose Basora's draw against Prime Ray Robinson maybe? i say maybe because Jose also has wins over Jake LaMotta and Holman Williams so i don't know if that Draw counts more than those

I'm not sure all of the fighters being mentioned are "great".

Pernell Whitakers "draw" against Chavez might be his most renowned result.

Does Mike McCallum have a better result than his draw with Toney? Many would rate this above his win over a rebounding Curry.

To get really deep, Lewis performed better and should have won by more in his draw against Evander Holyfield than his actual victory. He won close but competitive in the rematch but beat Holyfield going away in their initial encounter.

It's notable that two of the draws above were rip off's as was Nelson - Fenech mentioned by Flo. Obviously draws over ATG opponents where the massive majority believe you were ripped off are solid candidates for this thread.
