Can David Surov outbox Oleksandr Usyk

Usyk has fought 12 rounds, so he has that going for him.

 

Plus he's gonna have to fight someone that won't take a flopping dive to get out of a fight.

 

Surov looks good. He reminds me a bit of Bivol with his light feet and bouncy in and out movement. He also has heavy hands which is nice to see. I'd hold off saying he beats Usyk, but he clearly has lots of potential. Nice find.

He's good but he needs to start varying his movement and add some layers to his offense if he wants to be Usyk level. Stiff head + chest high guard is bad news against a good overhand right-er who can time him. You can only rely on in and out footwork so much.

 

Usyk will be a grandpa by the time Surov is ready to contend. Itauma, Leo Atang, Mullojonov, Dronov, Joshua Edwards, (hopefully) Zokhirov and others that are not on our radar yet will be his competition.

 

Far too early to rate Surov as a pro yet. Obviously, he's got class and solid fundamentals, but many elite Russian amateur boxers and Eastern Europeans in general simply can't cut it in the pros. It's more likely that Surov won't cut it than will. Usyk and Beterbiev are really the exception, not the rule. Jalolov looked like an absolute monster for years, and his pro career is in danger of fizzling into obscurity without fighting anyone close to the top 15.

Tishchenko, Povetkin, and Egor Mekhontsev, all amateurs who looked like they could beat anyone on their day but didn't repeat it in the pros. I'm sure there are others, too, who I can't think of off the top of my head. Surov looks exciting, and I'll be keeping an eye on him, but it's still a long way to go. He's very rigid defensively; he'd lose to Itauma pretty comfortably at the minute over 8/10 rounds.

Surov is good but he’ll never have good promotion, he’ll be avoided and “frozen out” until he declines from inactivity, like Dychko, Hrgovic, Jalolov and many others have been.

Promoters in the USA want American boxers, and promoters in the UK prefer British boxers.

 

Surov is indeed good and I like his style but I don't think he will be able to sustain it for 12 rounds... I've seen him quite exhausted after 3-4 rounds. Stamina will be his problem or he will have to adapt/change his style. By the time someone takes him to deep waters, we will see his limitations though...

 

This is unfortunately the truth. We've seen promoters sign dangerous EE fighters just to shelve them intentionally to protect their local assets.
