Could a prime Chris Byrd beat Alexander Povetkin

We all know they fought when Byrd was 37 years old and at the end of his career. In fairness, Povetkin himself didn’t have that many fights going in. But wondering if Byrd might pull it off when younger

I don't think so. I'm not a fan of guys that can't punch hard. You don't have to be a massive puncher, but you should be something like an Ali or Holmes where if they connect they can stun you (at the least). I give it up to Byrd tho because he had a very good career for not being able to really bang.

In a fight with Povetkin I see AP putting a lot of pressure on Byrd somewhat similar to Ike. I think it would take longer, but I think AP is way too active and throws too many good, crisp combinations and eventually gets Byrd out of there. AP TKO 11.

 

Byrd actually put up a fine showing against Povetkin. A better Byrd might have had a shot at beating that greenish Povetkin. Prime vs prime, it's still Povetkin for me though. As somebody said above: you have to have some kind of punch to stop Povetkin from just blasting you out there, and Byrd was a light hitter at HW.

 

It's possible but I don't see it.

 

I thought that was a very impressive performance by Alexander in their bout. Just how many managers are putting their guy--with minimal rounds and experience---in with Chris Byrd? This is one of those bouts that the experience elevates and polishes that Povetkin skillset a ton.

Think an earlier version makes it closer, but do not se Chris getting his hand raised at the end. Not against this guy.

 

Chris Byrd is being underrated in this thread. Tua was better than Povetkin, and put the pressure on heavier, and Byrd controlled that fight. I imagine Povetkin would spend most of a fight vs prime Byrd punching air. He was arguably outboxed by Marco Huck who also wasn’t a big puncher.

It's close. Tua beat Maskaev, Moorer, Ruiz, Izon, Rahman, Oquendo, almost all of them by brutal knockout. Povetkin beat Chambers, Chagaev, Whyte, Takam, Hughie, old versions of Byrd and Rahman. About even resume wise. Then again Povetkin was arguably beat by Huck and didn't know what to do when Klitschko Okolie'd him, and got knocked out a couple times. Tua was never knocked out or even knocked down. I can't see Povetkin surviving 12 rounds with Ike. Head to head I'd bet on Tua to stop Povetkin.

Tua was not better than Povetkin. For a boxer who was beaten every time he stepped up to world class, and was knocked out in the amateurs, Tua has been very overrated by a few people.

Tua was getting manhandled by Barrett. Povetkin is another level. Povetkin's fundamentals and defense are way better than Monte's.
