Who had the quietest prime in boxing history?

Pretty much unknown outside of hard-core boxing fans, until he beat Lacy.

He never became a mega star, but he did win sports personality of the year (which was more about achievement than personality) in the UK at some point thereafter.

 

He's not far off a good candidate i am thinking.

 

Larry and McCallum imo. The first was already mentioned being between the reigns of Ali and Tyson while the other was during the reign of the Four Kings. Granted Mike got some big fights with Toney and RJJ but he was no longer in his prime by that time.

 

Carlos Monzon maybe? I wasn't alive when he was active, so maybe he was more well known then. He reigned for a long time, is considered a top 5 ATG middleweight among boxing fans, but is hardly ever mentioned. Even among boxing fans he rarely shows up in fantasy fights.

The ratio of his accomplishments and skill compared to how much he is talked about his pretty huge. Not hard to see why though. He doesn't come from a big boxing country like USA, Britain, or Mexico. Boring style. Seems to be a horrible person.

I can see how you might put Monzon in that bracket, especially as you were to young or was not around when he was active, so fair play, as someone who was most definitely around, let me say his prime was not that quiet, he " burst " on the scene with the upset over Benvenuti, but soon stamped himself as a very formidable fighter, cool, calculating, and callous, he very quickly gained the reputation as a brooding, surly man, with little or no respect for women, or to a degree authority, but his ring accomplishments were mighty impressive, he was the monarch of all he surveyed, as you stipulate his style was somewhat boring, or looked that way, the other alternative was he was a calculator, the early rounds were a reconnaissance exercise, as the rounds ticked by, he would garner how much this particular opponent would trouble him and up his work rate accordingly, so yes it could appear boring, but it was his way of taking stock, plus he was possessed of insane stamina, I don't remember ever seeing him out of breath, or even breathing hard, lest we forget this was in the era of 15 rounders, and he had quite a few, so for me he isn't in the OP description, others may not agree, that's what makes the forum go round.
