Daniel "Unlimited title shots" Dubois

He definitely earned the 2nd shot after the impressive Hrgovic, Miller and Joshua wins.

 

He might have 'earned it' but is it really that impressive? Hrgovic was piecing him up before the UFC 1 tactics that Dubois was allowed to use took him out of the fight, if Miller came in lighter like for Ruiz fight he probably would have won. Dubois was beginning to break but Miller was just too fat to maintain the pressure. Joshua is probably in the twilight stages of his career and has suffered some rough fights and losses, Dubois caught him at the perfect time. That's the most legit of the 3 wins, but lets not kid ourselves and pretend he knocked out a prime Joshua.

 

One thing you certainly can't accuse Dubois of (in the Chisora vein) is running away to hide...

He's taken plenty of tough fights, with mixed results, and built a profile for himself that very few can match - and that makes him a good payday.

Like it or not, pulling decent numbers is one of the best ways to keep getting decent fights - it obviously helps that he's British, in that sense... But more than anything it's that willingness to fight.

Kabayel, rightly or wrongly, is a fair bit more prone to hiding away taking easy fights - it's undeniable when you look at his 6 years of fighting euro level journeymen, and then look at his preferred choices of opponent after Zhang (two more euro level journeymen in Hysa and Knyba)... He can't say he's done his best to be in a position to capitalize on his current position, can he?

Sure, Kabayel looks like a good fighter at the moment - but his resume is really quite thin... Zhang's a decent highlight, but his resume should be a lot better when you look how long ago he fought Chisora.

 

First was premature, sure, but in fairness he did look the best of a (limited) rest.

The second... To be honest I still think it was more to get rid of any talk whatsoever about asterisks - and it has.
All the nonsense about the lowblow (as it clearly was) ended after the domination second time around.
You could argue that, despite the fact he didn't deserve it after the terrible approach first time around, it was simply smart housekeeping for Usyk.

 

Who else is a better option? Fury is coming off 2 straight losses and has another fight booked. Kabayel fights once a year, and may wind up getting Usyk next. Parker just lost and will be out a while it seems. Who knows if or when A.J. comes back and if so, he's probably going to fight Fury.


To be fair, nobody other than Usyk has 2 better recent wins.

 

Its Kabayel's own fault for creating his pattern of having a decent win then back to easy fights.

Wardley V Dubois is a brilliant fight still. Guaranteed KO.

 

And fighting once a year almost very year.

 

There are 4 belts out there, so if Dubois is rewarded with title shots for being willing to fight top 5/10 contenders then I am fine with it.

Maybe not fair and Dubois does get alot of chances but the fairness fairy in boxing died a long time ago or never existed.

Going into the fight, the consensus was that Joshua was as good or better than he'd ever been. He was very experienced but under the age of 35, coming off back to back destructive wins.

I don't think the undefeated 29 year old Joshua who was ripped apart by Ruiz was necessarily any better. And I find it hard to believe that the green 27 year old Joshua who'd never been past the 7th round, was better on balance either.

I find it more likely that Dubois had a combination of size + power + youth + athleticism + aggression that Joshua had never faced before, and this was why he got violently KO'd in 5 rounds. It could have very easily happened to any version.

DDD definitely doesn't deserve to fight for the world title now, no boxer should be fighting for the world title when he's coming off a clean loss, like Dubois' loss to Usyk.
