I think that some people confuse "underrated" between boxing fans and non-boxing fans. Sanchez is a name you'd never hear drop from a casual's mouth, but here, everyone knows who he was. Etc. Etc.
When I've talked to casual fans, I hear the usual rundown of Tyson, Ali, Mayweather, maybe Crawford, Pacquaio, and the four kings. Sanchez is in no way comparable to their brand of popularity, you're not gonna hear his name referenced offhand in a random show or movie. Also, Harry Greb is quite highly rated considering there is NO SURVIVING FOOTAGE of him.
Well i guess it varies, in hispanic communities, social media such as IG, Tiktok, X, heck even IRL with the few people i know who actually watch boxing (still casuals, most of my pals don't even watch boxing at all) they all mention Sanchez, Sanchez this, Sanchez that, Sanchez everywhere, and it's the kind of people you'd ask who the best boxers of all time are and instantly name Manny Pacquiao, Floyd and ****ing Oleksandr Usyk. It's the same thing with Finito Lopez, the guy got a **** ton of popularity when the animanga series Hajime No Ippo reached worldwide hispanic popularity with the videos of this one youtuber who made a recap of all the series, everyone and their mothers swear he's #1 and the unquestionable undisputed GOAT of Latino fighters without ever watching one second of actual footage of his.
Heck, i bet all the assets to my name that if you asked one of those guys to name Finito's best wins they'd say Wally and Eiji Date!
Makes sense, I live in an area where boxing isn't as overwhelmingly popular. The most you get over here is maybe an old guy who used to watch fights back in the 80s/90s.
Larry Holmes. Every single time he’s the subject of a Facebook post, someone jumps in with the “most underrated heavyweight of all time” line. I always point out that he’s consistently in the all time top five heavyweights listed by everyone and their dog. I’ve no idea how he’s considered underrated.
