Fighters who people think are underrated but are actually not?

Larry Holmes for Heavyweights.

I'd say Salvador Sanchez, pound for pound.

As much as I like his style at his best, I would say Tony Tucker.

 

I think that some people confuse "underrated" between boxing fans and non-boxing fans. Sanchez is a name you'd never hear drop from a casual's mouth, but here, everyone knows who he was. Etc. Etc.

 

When I've talked to casual fans, I hear the usual rundown of Tyson, Ali, Mayweather, maybe Crawford, Pacquaio, and the four kings. Sanchez is in no way comparable to their brand of popularity, you're not gonna hear his name referenced offhand in a random show or movie.

Also, Harry Greb is quite highly rated considering there is NO SURVIVING FOOTAGE of him.

 

Makes sense, I live in an area where boxing isn't as overwhelmingly popular. The most you get over here is maybe an old guy who used to watch fights back in the 80s/90s.

Every single time he’s the subject of a Facebook post, someone jumps in with the “most underrated heavyweight of all time” line.
I always point out that he’s consistently in the all time top five heavyweights listed by everyone and their dog. I’ve no idea how he’s considered underrated.
