Australian Boxing/SM Memorial thread

The IBF have a long & distinguished history of supporting young Australian talent get opportunities on the international stage - including most notably at world championship level. The most exclusive & prestigious club in Australian boxing is the IBF world champions club (official policy - 'No Horndogs allowed'). None of the other major sanctioning bodies could really give a toss about Australian boxing. The WBC stooped really low I thought when they shafted Andrew Moloney in an interim world title fight in Perth in order to give the belt to a Mexican. That tells you where their priorities lie. The IBF has never shafted an Australian fighting in Australia like that. Jai has had a decent run with them (although they should never have stripped him for taking an extra fight ahead of the Briedis rematch). The kid needs to get paid though so good luck to him with Snuffa. Hopefully they get him the big fights & as many world title belts as he wants.

What card would they be looking at putting this one on?

 

Guys what's happening with Jackson England? Only one fight last year. Ranked 5th in the IBF I think the Kazaksthan fighter is shying away from him. He's going to be 29 this year but he's a young 29. He's got time on his side.

What are his chances at becoming a world champion? He seems to improve with every fight.

 

I heard they are looking at doing an IBF eliminator bout over in Perth around April.

Vegas Larfield? He's doing OK I think. I haven't seen him since that 2023 loss to Nolan. Has he been on No Limits cards since then?

Hi Lads & Lasses - Just finished watching the Men's Commonwealth games trials that have been running for the past week. Some very competitive fights & a couple of upsets.

A bloke from WA, Rory Booth, pulled a big upset in the Light Heavy division on day one by stopping Marlon Sevehon. I didn't actually see the fight but it opened up Light Heavy for the field. Very evenly matched fights throughout the week in that division from what I did see. Paul Trainor, the national champ, won through in the final. Trainor also lost on day one in another upset but recovered to win the final. Would personally have liked to have seen Booth fight in the final (unlucky not to have his penultimate bout scored more favourably, I thought). He lost again today fighting for third but he showed what he could do earlier in the tournament.

Jye Dixon won through at Bantamweight. He only faced Riek Chuol once. Again, I would like to have seen Chuol against him in the final but unfortunately Chuol's other round robin match was scored unfavourably which meant he missed the final. Chuol finished strongly in the final round of his round robin match against Dixon. I would like to have seen rounds 4, 5 & 6 in the final. Not to be.

Jacob Cassar won through at Welterweight. He faced a steadily increasing quality of opponent as the tournament progressed & had to beat national Welter champ, Gene Keremete, twice to win through in the end. If I'm being honest, I thought Keremete had the better of both contests, but I'm never going to complain about judges looking after our best young talent - which Cassar certainly is. A long week for him with six fights (all wins, officially).

Lachlan Lawson won through at Heavyweight in a one-off contest today.

By my reckoning, we will be taking four blokes to the Commonwealth games:

• Jye Dixon (Qld) at Bantamweight
• Jacob Cassar (Vic) at Welterweight
• Paul Trainor (NSW) at Light Heavy, &
• Lachlan Lawson (NSW) at Heavyweight.

Strong showings throughout the tournament from Gene Keremete at Welterweight (who made the final) & Rory Booth at Light Heavy (who didn't). Along with Riek Chuol (who also didn't), they're certainly among the best amateur boxers in the country. Callum Peters didn't contest the tournament.

Three women are certain to be selected in the Commonwealth games team from what I saw a couple of weeks ago:

• Monique Suraci (ACT) at Bantamweight
• Lekeisha Pergoliti (WA) at Light Middle, &
• Emma Sue Greentree (NSW) at Middleweight.

One more to be added. I couldn't speculate as to who that might be b/c the fighters I would have been inclined to take didn't contest selections. With the selection trials now complete, it's a case of wait and see for an official announcement.

The Maloney Brothers are awesome.

 

I wouldn’t mind seeing the bigger Maloney against Sam Goodman would be a fun domestic scrap.

 

Would be a good. Who do you think would win?

 

At this stage I would favour Goodman he is younger and bigger but the Maloney lads are tough I am pretty sure it would go the distance with Goodman winning a 116-112 type decision.
