Two Japanese brothers, Kusuo and Katsuaki Eguchi fighting for the vacant Japanese minimumweight title, in Tokyo, June 1993. Actually happened literally a week after I was born, which is cool. Extremely rare you'll ever see something like this. Don't be put off by the fact it's minimumweight... it's absolutely thrilling to watch. Although I can't imagine their parents thought so... god, can you imagine? Wouldn't expect anything less from Japanese fighters though. They're so exciting to watch, although unfortunately, as we've seen in recent years, their style of hit-and-get-hit often leads to traumatic brain injuries. Absolute warriors.
In the words of the philosopher, Jagi: "A younger brother can never beat an older brother!" Pretty good fight, I can't help but laugh at how Katsuaki's ass is always wet from (I'm assuming) his chair.
I noticed that too... or maybe it was just that fighting his older brother brought back bad childhood memories. This your first time viewing?
Some people say they find the smaller guys boring due to the lack of power... but what they lack in power, they make up for in speed and volume. For me, it's the in-between divisions that I sometimes find boring, from around featherweight to middleweight, although of course it depends on the fighters. But the super tiny guys are just so fast, I dunno, it's actually quite good to watch, despite the lack of KOs.
I think that there's pretty respectable fighters in any weight class you go to, though I am guilty of not having seen much from fighters around featherweight and under. I usually gravitate towards light, welter, middle, and heavyweight fighters when it comes to enjoyment. The main essentials for me are punch percentage, power, and drama, with drama being the BIG key for great fights. Even if you're not seeing guys rocked around the ring... What could be better than a back and forth?
To be honest, I'll watch any division if it's a big fight, with top pound-for-pound guys. It's always exciting or at least intriguing no matter what weight they're at. You can't not get excited for someone like Inoue, haha. Or any Japanese fighters for that matter. But I watch all the undercards and if I see there's quite a few fights on there that are from featherweight to middleweight, I can't say it gets my juices flowing, particularly if I don't know the fighters all that well. The rare chance I get to see the super tiny guys I always look forward to though, as I know they're likely gonna throw a lot of punches. And as for heavyweight, well, you can't beat it. I could watch a full card of heavyweights that have just been dragged off the street outside the arena, and I'd be entertained. I don't care how sloppy the fights are. As long as they're not the type of heavyweights that just clinch and hug the whole fight... I hate that.
I agree with you, and I should probably get back to watching more fights with Japanese fighters. Other than this one, I think the last Japanese fighter I was checking out was Guts Ishimatsu... Maybe some fighters that were involved with Avelar and Rosario as well. Whoever they are, Japanese fighters always come and give their best. Heavyweights are great when they've got proper skill behind em, I always love watching guys like Moorer, Witherspoon, Holmes, etc. You got any other good niche fights to recommend? Short or long, whatever you've got on the mind.
Hmmm... I already mentioned this fight in another thread yesterday. This content is protected This was the first of the TV fights on the Luis Ortiz-Charles Martin undercard, New Years Day 2022. Every single fight on that card was a heavyweight fight, strangely enough. But this one has always stuck in my mind for just how exciting it was while it lasted. Unfortunately the stupid little referee ruins it. Who knows how much better it could've turned out to be?
