as a massive Vargas fan, I disagree. He was on the road to being great until his moron group of promoters and managers threw him in with Trinidad at 20 years old.
I don't hate him at all. I used to always get his ppv's. But his record is generous. He lost more than what his record shows. And Triniad beat him. De la hoya took the last 4 rounds off which was lunacy. He's overrated.
He was overrated at the time he was fighting, I think he’s viewed pretty fairly now. He was old and almost best Mayweather, best an old but still good Whitaker. Mosley fights I’ll have to watch again
De La Hoya was a 5'11 guy who started his career at 130 and 135. He almost beat Floyd but he was the biggest opponent of Floyds career. These were great eras at 147 and 154 but it was difficult for him to beat ATG caliber fighters above 140. At 147 his best easy wins were over guys who came from lower weight classes like Whitaker, JCC, Camacho and Gonzalez.
So having losses makes you overrated? Isn't that what you did with Canelo? Figures since you whorship Mayweather for being undefeated....
lol at the revisionist history of Oscar almost beating Mayweather. Mayweather never got out of second gear in that fight and coasted to a win.
oscar peaked early and became much more stationary in the second half of his career. he lost his legs in the trinidad fight but was still great enough to compete with just about anyone for a while after that. first half of his career the guy was sensational. in hindsight, if i had known the kind of guy he was in private, i would have expected an early decline. dude parties like a rock star.
No. Having quite a number of losses makes you overrated. Quartey beat him. So did Sturm. Add two more losses to his resume just like add at least two more to Canelo's. GGG beat him twice.
Fighting in second gear in order for the fight to appear competitive to get a rematch. This was the only fight I ever saw when the winner asked for a rematch during the in-ring post fight interview. Mayweather could have made Oscar look really bad if he wanted to. Oscar was practically shot at that point.
