Most Overrated trainers/coaches?

Eddie Reynoso and Vergil Hunter

Emmanuel Stewart is a bit overrated but forging 2 heavyweight greats back to back is a pretty damn good feat. It will never be replicated anytime soon

Ben Davison is also very overrated in the UK. Angelo Dundee could be another choice but he doesn't get talked about much nowadays besides his work with Ali

 

Teddy Atlas …he turned bad mouthing Mike Tyson into a lucrative career

 

TEDDY ATLAS...no question, the guy knows jack about boxing.
Angelo Dundee....great cut man, not much as an actual trainer.
Emanuel Steward....slightly overrated, he knew how to train tall slim fighters but no big success with anyone else.
Robert Garcia....basically 50/50.
Panama Lewis....prob not overrated, but total SCUMBAG.

 

What trainer ever brought up more home grown champions?

Agree Ben Davidson is well........ not sure ? what is his background, did he box, seems to have come up on the inside rail, personally I find him a bit David Brent, likeable enough, but not a lot of substance, as for great, thinking you might have to back to, Freddie Brown, Ray Arcel,
Whitey Bimstein, Charlie Goldman, etc, over the last decades Steward would be my pick.

McCallum had a very average height compared to his opponents.

 

5'11/6' is pretty tall for 154 in the 80s.

 

Clearly, Teddy Atlas. He never took a single boxer from his pro debut to a title. Ever.

Someone mentioned Emanuel Steward, which is ridiculous.

Steward opened a gym in a neighborhood that produced countless champions over the years. Within the first decade or so that his initial amateurs turned pro, he took Thomas Hearns, Hilmer Kenty, Jimmy Paul, Milton McCrory, Duane Thomas, John David Jackson, and Leeonzer Barber from the amateurs to championship wins, and got guys like Jackie Beard, Dujuan Johnson, and Caveman Lee title shots.

Those guys didn't show up finished products. They were neighborbood kids.

Open a gym in any neighborhood, and see how many kids not only stick with it, but turn pro, and become freaking world champions or title challengers?

And some of the best of them didn't make it to title shots because they self-destructed outside the ring. Bernard "Superbad" Mays and Ricky Womack being two.

That's a whole career for most, and Steward was a trainer for another 30+ years and had a laundry list of champions and top challengers calling him night and day asking to be trained by him.

 

I don’t want to list out the height of each name opponent, but most of them were almost as tall if not taller.

 

Cus d'Amato. Hyped beyond belief vecause of training Tyson. All of this "if Cus was alive BS" adds to his mythology. People seem to forget how he was handling Floyd Patterson. But you could argue he show his greatness that way, as he didn't want his fighter to lose.

 

Angelo Dundee. He was gifted Ali and Leonard after they had already been trained by someone else, in fact his best fighters were trained by someone before him. Did some fine tuning, that's about it.
