Biggest upsets in Boxing and why they happend

Yep I mentioned all those guys in another thread just now. Had good fights vs each other. I tipped Hipkins to beat Trinidad. Was going to mention tarver as well I also tipped him.

SRL awarded a controversal SD over 12 rounds

Why it happened: *This is my Father's take, not mine.* Hagler was ready to retire (admitily so). SRL needed the money from being retired and pretty much blew all of his earnings. Ray only fought once since retiring in 1982. If marketed right, this could make enough money so Hagler could retire comfortably where this blemish on his record wouldn't even matter to him. Hagler earned around $20 million from the fight and a percent of the total revenue. SRL demanded a bigger ring, 10oz gloves instead of 8oz, and the fight was only 12 rounds instead of 15 rounds favored by Hagler. Hagler only agreed to the conditions due to the larger amount of the purse.
This further bothered my Dad because Hagler came out in the first couple of rounds in an orthodox style. Easily losing the first 2 rounds. He pressed the action but "didn't press the action" the way he always did in the 60+ bouts before that. Even knowing how huge this fight was.
SRL ended up landing 15-20 more punches (which most were shoeshine) while throwing fewer. Hagler's agression looked staged and almost unwilling at times. One judge had it 118-110 for SRL which again, further sided with "The fix is in" in my Father's eyes.
I was 11 years old when they fought and I remember my Dad saying, I'll never watch boxing again because I know without a shadow of a doubt, boxing is corrupted. And he's stayed true to his word. Through out the years, when I said I was buying a PPV, my dad would say "Why are you watching that pre-determined sport?"

I watched their first fight and thought Tarver didn't do to badly. It was more so just right before the fight that I tipped him to win and as they were fighting. It wasn't as if I tipped him leading up to it. At the time I probably only knew they were rematching each other the week of the fight. It was also a bit of a gut feeling..

 

I was a huge Jones fan at the time and I couldn't believe it! That was the end of him at top level - and we never saw the Roy of old again. It's a pity he carried on for SO long after. I think a lot of younger fans judge him on those later years and losses now when, in boxing (and stylistic) terms, he was an old fighter.

 

P4p one of the greatest ever in his prime. I was still shocked when it happened even though I did say to my brother and friend at the time he was going to knock him out. It was a brutal left hook. Yep RJJ was never the same fighter after that.
