Marvellous Marvin Hagler Vs James Toney at Middleweight/Super Middleweight?

I think it ends up being a close but controversial decision with the winner forever debated kinda similar to the McCallum fights. Toney would land the harder counter shots but in turn would get outlanded in total shots though many would be ineffective.

 

Absolutely. The reason Nunn was so far ahead (9-1 officially on one card) is because the fight was in Iowa.

It was definitely more competitive than that and Toney had been coming on strong the precious 4 or so rounds.

This fight if we want Toney at his best he’d need to be 168lbs with a good camp, good condition on the scales etc his discipline, natural size (190lbs) and the troubles of basically destroying yourself in camp and cheating your bodies metabolism will need to be set aside, guys who knew Toney said he had a big appetite and exercised himself to pieces early on… he sparred 5mins at a time in the area of 30-40 rounds a day I forget exactly how many… but it was sickening, ran daily, lifted weights for a couple hours that’s among other things like finishing every session with 1 speed bag 20min marathon lol his stuff sounds unbelievable but it’d explain a lot he had a 14 day on 1 off split - so he says but it ain’t impossible, it also didn’t last long eventually it was just weights and sparring. Anyways if we magically unshackle “Ice Tea” Toney (an actual nickname he originally came up for himself…) of all possible injury, weight issues and overtraining and let him come in at his real weight of 175-180lbs day of weigh in style in Haglers time at a catch weight… he’d beat the F out of Hagler, the threads asking If Hagler can beat a big light heavyweight if we made it fair and both were at there “best” but rolling the dice? Real world emaciated Toney? look at the schedule before the Tiberis “SD” he had the foot on the gas in 3 years 3 months he had 31 bouts Reggie, Nunn, Sosa, McCallum etc his fight frequency killed two birds with one stone… he built experience under pressure and frequent fights meant he’d keep his weight down but it took its toll and up he went - so this wasn’t a total waste of time… did you know Shaq and Toney are related by blood?

 

Is this a joke? And let me say I like Toney but Hagler is in a different class at middleweight. Toney was LUCKY to have even kept his title with TWO split decisions against Johnson and Tiberi and I thought Mccallum beat him the first time.
And the Nunn fight I can already tell most of you have not even watched it because Nunn actually STUNNED Toney a couple of times and was HANDILY ahead on the scorecards. Sure Toney had his moments but they were few and far in between. GREAT win though for Toney who overcame everything to get the win.

 

You have to understand Toney isn’t a middleweight, he was emaciated it’s why he could fight at 190lbs / open weight and legit HW shots he wasn’t the size of Hagler … this is the same mistake we make with guys like Gerald fighting Marvellous they aren’t really the same weight if alls fair… both guys were susceptible to overtraining, dehydration, miscalculating there prep etc and Toney in particular basically never fought to his best at 160lbs… if JT fought during the “day of” weigh ins as his career progressed and he tried to make 160lbs he’d die in the 3rd round in his “Prime” - Toney in Marvin’s time would be about 175-180lbs and if he comes in like that comfortably at say a catch weight he’d mess Hagler up bad and stop him no worries,

Hagler at his best would win, I think it could be a really ugly fight though.
Toney was a smart fighter, he’d try to confuse Hagler and he’d have some success, Hagler would win through work rate as much as anything.

 

Toney was best when guys would came at him, when he could pick them apart with his masterful counterpunching.

While Hagler could come forward, it wasn’t his usual style, and I think Hagler’s versatility would play to his advantage. I think he would use the ring quite a bit and win a competitive decision. 7-5/8-4 type fight. It’s about an 100-1 shot that this fight would end in a stoppage.

This is regarding a title fight at 160.

 

What Hagler are we talking about? Most remember the come forward Hagler but Hagler at his best was a boxer that used movement. Movement gives Toney a lot of problems. I could see that Hagler winning a UD. The come forward Hagler loses by UD to Toney. Too many opportunities to counter. Hagler got hit a lot during that time.
