Why do some people on here downplay Charles, Moore and Walcott

It's a not so subtle way of denigrating Marciano. But all 3 were excellent fighters. Walcott was more up and down but after 1945, he put together a hell of a win streak, knocked out Harold Johnson and Ezzard Charles and gave Marciano all he could handle. Charles and Moore both ATG light heavyweights who both defeated 200+pound men, especially Moore who defeated over 200lbs guys like Valdez and Baker.

And of course, they wouldn't be heavies today but then again, neither would Oscar Bonavena, Doug Jones, Henry Cooper, Zora Folley, Eddie Machen etc. Even Joe Frazier at 5'11 205 would likely not be a heavyweight. The only under 6 foot that would be a heavyweight is Mike Tyson and we know that because he routinely defeated super heavies who would be heavies today.

For one thing I think some people get too hung up on numbers in the loss column. I’ve been guilty of this too but I try to only bring it up when a relevant comparison seems appropriate. Anyway, Walcott, Charles and Moore all fought Marciano with losses in the double digits. But what needs to be factored into the equation was that these guys had brutal schedules against high quality opponents. They sometimes fought guys just weeks apart. And in those days a lot of fighters turned pro with limited amateur careers or sometimes none at all. And then theres the big issue of age. Yes walcott and Moore were in their late 30’s which was considered significantly old for boxing or any sport in those days. But both were in top shape and still highly relevant. Walcott was the heavyweight champion. And Archie had plenty of fight left in him for years after the Rocky fight. Ezzard Charles was younger than the other two but probably wasn’t as well built for old age.. that and he had faced just about every top fighter in boxing save for Jesus Christ almighty….

Because they would all lose to Roy Jones jr

Even prime Joe Louis would have a 50/50 against Jerry Quarry

Why do people ask questions when they have a very specific answer in mind and don't want to listen or consider other answers?

EDIT: And because this is the internet and meaning is lost behind text, yes this question is self-defeating, that's part of the joke.

Also, another criticism is they wouldn't be modern day heavyweights. But if that's the standard, then you have to throw out much of Liston’s resume as his best opponents were sub 200 pounders, who could make light heavyweight with day before weigh ins. Floyd Patterson was his best scalp and Patterson certainly wouldn't have a career at heavyweight today. He'd likely do a Roy Jones, where he ventures to HW to fight a hand picked opponent to grab a belt. You can say Ali picked up his 1st loss to a guy who would be a smaller sized cruiserweight today. I doubt a 5'11 205 pound man would make a career at HW in 2026. Usyk is 6'3 220 pounds, he'd be considered a giant in the 60s like Liston was at 6'1 215.

The plain reality of the matter is that people over time just got bigger and it’s still happening now. The kids my daughters are going to school with are monsters. Even the girls are so much bigger now. Sure you had people in the mid twentieth century who were 6’5” 250 lbs. but not nearly as many of them and most of them weren’t in boxing. The few who were weren’t typically successful because they didn’t learn HOW to fight “ big.” If guys like Primo Carnera and Buddy Baer knew how to take full advantage of their size, I’m not so sure even Joe Louis would have beaten them and even if he did he’d have a much harder time. Boxing went through a major transformation when skilled big men like Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe and the Klitschkos came around.

Because Walcott was at the end of his career and would retire after the Marciano fights.

Charles was 2-2 going into the 1st Marciano fight and would go on to lose more fights than he won after the Marciano fights.

Moore was on a good run and was in good form but he was 40 years old with well over 100 fights.

No one denies they ain't good names but it's also a fact Marciano didn't fight them at their best.

Agree. Ezzard Charles was one of the best fighters of all time from 1944-1950 and had one of the most insane winning streaks ever. By 1953 he had taken a big step back.

There is NOT a full verision of the first Louis v Walcott fight! Maybe Walcott deserved the win, but there is no proof on film. The fight was scored on the N.Y. Round scoring system, so Walcott did not benefit from the knock downs. Modern scoring with 10-8 rounds could have helped him.

Because Walcott wasn't the HW champion with 2 recent wins vs Charles, one of them being an ATG KO over a close to his prime Top 5 P4P ATG. He was just an old man.

Moore wasn't the LHW champion of the world on a 55-1-2 streak the past half a dozen years, didn't just beat the #4 and #1 HW contender, and P4P ATG Harold Johnson. He was just an old man with wear and tear. And the 188 lbs Marciano was so naturally bigger than Moore that it doesn't give Marciano any P4P credit, despite Moore having to come down from 196 to fight Olson right before Marciano.

Charles ? Shot. Totally didn't beat the #10 rated Jimmy Bivins, the #7 rated Cesar Brion, the #2 rated Rex Layne, the #10 rated Colley Wallace and the #9 rated Bob Satterfield after Walcott and before Marciano. He lost to the #1 rated Nino Valdes and the P4P ATG Harold Johnson though, absolutely pathetic from him.

Moore was on a good run of a form yes but he still had alot of wear and tear he was 41 years old with over 170 fights at that time.

And just 1 year later Patterson absolutely spanked Moore in just 5 rounds.

Charles was 2-2 going into the Marciano fight and ended up going 10-13 after the Marciano fights.
