Were there any straight forward sluggers in boxing history that could beat Hagler?

For the sake of clarification, who do you consider to be a straight forward slugger?

No slugger could ever beat Hagler. Not even if Hagler chose to slug it out himself.

Just guessing , but I think that Golovkin would be an example of a straight forward slugger. GGG would lose to Marvin as would the others of his ilk. To beat Marvin you have to be a little more creative with your offense.

Wouldn't classify GGG a slugger but more of a boxer puncher who likes to comes forward a lot. In a head to head slugging match if they both fought up close I still think he gets beaten to the punch by Hagler's sharp counters.

That’s a tall order. You’d need to find a middleweight who was :

    - a pure slugger as boxers presumably don’t count
    - had an iron chin
    - had the skill as a good puncher to outsmart Hagler.
    - had incredible stamina and a lot of heart

I don’t know if anyone at 160 matches that complete description.

Even if you remove everything else, Hagler's durability, conditioning and willpower were far too great to lose to any of the 160s pure sluggers.

Yes, because I think we all can see that Hagler could be hit and at his size he just wouldn't be durable enough. So, Greg is gonna be right, and anyone who says most decent heavyweight punching champions are gonna be right. There are limits to men of Hagler's size. Chin is one of them. Weight and height are also among those things, as are width and length. Perhaps even viscosity.

No, but a fight with Billy Papke might be the best fight in all of history.

To be honest with you Haggler is going to be all wrong for any slugger his own size.

He is going to be able to apply the violence a bit more clinically with vicious counters.
